2019 Fantasy Outlook
McGruder signed a three-year, $15 million deal with the Clippers this offseason after being waived by the Heat. The swingman spent his first three years in the league with Miami and averaged 7.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists across 23.5 minutes last season, making 45 starts. McGruder can play either position on the wing, though he figures to be the third option at best at small forward and shooting guard after the Clippers acquired Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. George and Leonard are locked into starting roles, and it appears Landry Shamet is too, leaving McGruder to scrap for minutes off the bench. Playing time could be hard to find, with Mo Harkless and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams coming off the bench ahead of him. McGruder was a quality addition to an increasingly deep Los Angeles rotation, but his fantasy value is minimal, and he can be avoided in most formats. Read Past Outlooks

He attended Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C., before transferring to Arlington Country Day High School in Jacksonville, Florida, for his senior year. McGruder has made numerous visits to the Baptist Hospital Miami Cancer Institute to spend time with pediatric cancer patients -- a cause inspired by the loss of his grandmother to cancer. In 2017, he started the Rodney McGruder Sports Initiative at Georgia Jones-Ayers Middle School in Miami to introduce students to different professionals and careers available in the sports industry. McGruder also participated in the 24th Annual Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp for Young Survivors during Memorial Day Weekend in 2018. College/International Summary

McGruder was an AAU teammate of Michael Beasley, so he decided to head to Kansas State to play for coach Frank Martin. The 6-foot-4 guard did not play much as a freshman, but he moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore. He provided 11.1 points and a team-leading 5.9 rebounds per game for the Wildcats, including a 16-point, 15-rebound game in a win over Texas Tech. He was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team and moved up to the Second Team as a junior. He put up 15.8 points and 5.2 rebounds as the team advanced to the Big Dance again. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, McGruder scored 30 points against Southern Miss -- that was the third time he reached the 30-point mark in the season. }The guard averaged 15.6 points and 5.4 rebounds as a senior as the Wildcats tied Kansas for the Big 12 regular-season title. He had three straight 20-point games, including the regular-season finale and two Big 12 tournament wins. McGruder was named to the First Team All-Big 12 and the All-Big 12 Tournament teams. He went undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft but latched on with the Orlando Magic for that year's Orlando NBA Summer League, but things didn't work out, and he spent the 2013-14 season playing for Atomeromu in Hungary, where he averaged 14.4 points per game. He would made his NBA debut in 2016 playing for the Miami Heat.

McGruder managed four points (2-3 FG, 0-1 3Pt) and three rebounds in 13 minutes during Saturday's 126-103 win over the Pelicans.
ANALYSIS
McGruder was one of six reserves on the team to earn double-digit minutes in the lopsided victory but didn't make a major impact. He also didn't see the floor during Thursday's tilt versus the Lakers, so his spot in the rotation seems tenuous at best.

2018

In his third NBA season, McGruder established new career-highs in points (7.6), rebounds (3.6) and assists (1.7) per game. He also improved his free-throw percentage to 72.2 percent -- up significantly from his previous career mark of 60.8 percent. McGruder started the season quickly, averaging 16.0 points and 7.4 rebounds over his first five games, including back-to-back 19-point efforts against the Hornets on Oct. 20 and the Knicks on Oct. 24. Down the stretch, McGruder had 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks in a March 2 win over the Nets. Just over a month later, McGruder was waived by the Heat on April 7 and subsequently claimed on waivers by the Clippers. McGruder was not eligible to appear in the postseason for Los Angeles.

2017

McGruder was ruled out indefinitely at the start of the 2017-18 campaign due to a stress fracture in his left leg. He remained sidelined for several months before returning to action in late February. McGruder was initially assigned to play with Sioux Falls in the G League. There, he averaged 13.5 points and 5.0 rebounds over two games. He made his season NBA debut against Philadelphia on Feb. 27, scoring three points in nine minutes. McGruder's playing time varied throughout the remainder of the regular season, topping out at 26 minutes. On April 4, he scored a season-high 14 points in a win over Atlanta. Two days later, he grabbed a season-best four rebounds against the Knicks. McGruder remained on the team's roster into the postseason. He played in four contests during Miami's five-game opening round series against Philadelphia. McGruder totaled 16 minutes in the series, scoring two points and grabbing four rebounds.

2016

Rodney McGruder declared for the 2013 NBA Draft but was not selected. He spent the following campaign playing for Atomeromu SE in Hungary, averaging 14.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Over the next two seasons, he played a combined 77 games in the D-League between the Maine Red Claws and the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He excelled with the Skyforce during the 2015-16 playoffs, averaging 22.7 points and 5.9 rebounds to help the squad win the league championship. McGruder finally got his chance in the NBA during the 2016-17 campaign. He played 78 games with the Miami Heat, averaging 25.2 minutes per contest. In his rookie season, McGruder posted per-game averages of 6.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Against Cleveland on Dec. 9, he pulled down a season-high eight rebounds and dished five assists. On Feb. 6, he scored a career-high 15 points while collecting five rebounds and four assists in a win over Minnesota. That performance was part of a strong February in which McGruder averaged 8.0 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 40.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
Due to a leg injury, McGruder didn't make his season debut until late February, going on to play 18 games for the Heat. He held a relatively small role, seeing 16.6 minutes per night and averaging 5.1 points with 1.8 rebounds. The attempts were limited, but the 26-year-old shot 15-of-35 from thee (42.9 percent), an upgrade from his rookie mark of 33.2 percent. It’ll continue to be difficult for the Kansas State product to garner significant run, as Miami’s logjam on the wing didn't get any relief over the offseason. Even in deep Fantasy leagues, owners would be best to avoid McGruder.
McGruder, in his first NBA season last year, saw a solid 25.2 minutes per game, largely due to a myriad of injuries plaguing the Heat. The 6-foot-4 wing underwhelmed, however, posting just 6.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 41.3 percent from the field and 73-of-220 (33.2 percent) from beyond the arc. He’s a gritty defender, despite being undersized. Ultimately, the Heat are hoping he can turn into a more proficient three-point shooter and ball-handler as well. That said, he may struggle to find the workload he garnered last season, especially if the team stays relatively healthy. He’ll be fighting with the likes of Tyler Johnson, Justice Winslow, Josh Richardson and Wayne Ellington for reserve minutes at the shooting guard and small forward. Even if he does see a tad over 25 minutes per game again during the 2017-18 campaign, he’s a very low-usage player, which generally doesn’t bode well in a Fantasy context.
