Personal Bio

Jalen Marquis McDaniels was born in 1998 in Federal Way, Washington to Will and Angela McDaniels. He has a younger brother, Jaden, who earned McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand Classic All-Star honors in 2019. McDaniels attended Federal Way High School and was part of a team that took the Class 4A state title in his junior year. As a senior, he led the team in points, rebounds, and blocks en route to a 29-0 record and a repeat as Class 4A champs. As a result, McDaniels was named to the USA Today and The News Tribune's All-State team as well being the All-City MVP. You can follow him on Instagram (@jalenmcdaniels).

College/International Summary

When coach Brian Dutcher took over for his mentor, Steve Fisher, he knew he would start his Aztecs tenure with McDaniels on his team. The 6-foot-10 forward redshirted the 2016-17 season and was ready for Dutcher's debut. For the first 11 games of his freshman season, the forward came off the bench but showed signed of being able to handle more responsibility. He had 13 boards in an early-season win over Sacramento State. He joined the starters for Mountain West play and compiled eight double-doubles in the regular season. The Aztecs won their last six games and then swept through the Mountain West tournament, including a win over Nevada. McDaniels had 17 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in the win over the Wolf Pack. He had 18 points and nine rebounds in the NCAA Tournament loss against Houston. As a sophomore, McDaniels started every game and led the team with 15.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest. He had six straight double-doubles in conference play and helped beat the Wolf Pack in the tournament again with another double-double. The San Diego State season ended in a loss to Utah State. McDaniels applied for the 2019 NBA Draft after the season and was selected with 52nd overall draft pick by the Charlotte Hornets.

In McDaniels' second season with the Hornets, the young forward averaged 7.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.4 blocks. The 23-year-old set career-bests in points per game, assists per game, steals per game and blocks per game. McDaniels hit an efficient 46.8 percent from the field, 33.5 percent from three-point range and 70.3 percent from the charity stripe. Although the forward only played in 47 games, he started in 18 of them and logged an average of 19.2 minutes. McDaniels recorded 16 double-digit scoring performances and in two of those games, he notched double-doubles. The second-year forward posted a career-high 21 points, making 9-of-14 from the field, against the Thunder on April 7. He also set a career-high 12 rebounds, three of which being offensive rebounds, on May 4 versus the Pistons. Defensively, McDaniels played exceptionally well, logging a career-high four steals against the Nets on April 16. McDaniels also had a great defensive stat line in his play-in debut against the Pacers on May 18, as he stole the ball twice and blocked a shot in just 16 minutes of action. Overall, McDaniels improved in a lot of areas his sophomore season, as he enhanced his offensive rebounding ability (1.0 offensive rebound per game) and his defensive efficiency (0.6 steals per game and 0.4 blocks per game).

2019

Following two collegiate seasons at San Diego State, McDaniels was selected by the Hornets with the 52nd overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The rookie made his NBA debut Oct. 25 against the Timberwolves. He played three minutes, posting two points (1-2 FG) and one rebound. Overall, he appeared in 16 games for Charlotte, averaging 5.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.2 blocks in 18.3 minutes. He shot 47.1 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three and 82.4 percent from the free-throw line. McDaniels set single-game career highs of 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two threes, two steals and two blocks. His best performance of the campaign was Feb. 12 against the Timberwolves. In 23 minutes, McDaniels posted 10 points (4-4 FG, 2-2 3Pt), six rebounds, two steals and one assist with no turnovers. McDaniels also appeared in 31 G League games with the Greensboro Swarm. In 32.0 minutes per game there, he averaged 15.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks. He shot 44.3 percent from the field, 38.6 percent from three and 82.8 percent from the free-throw line.
