In McDaniels' second season with the Hornets, the young forward averaged 7.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.4 blocks. The 23-year-old set career-bests in points per game, assists per game, steals per game and blocks per game. McDaniels hit an efficient 46.8 percent from the field, 33.5 percent from three-point range and 70.3 percent from the charity stripe. Although the forward only played in 47 games, he started in 18 of them and logged an average of 19.2 minutes. McDaniels recorded 16 double-digit scoring performances and in two of those games, he notched double-doubles. The second-year forward posted a career-high 21 points, making 9-of-14 from the field, against the Thunder on April 7. He also set a career-high 12 rebounds, three of which being offensive rebounds, on May 4 versus the Pistons. Defensively, McDaniels played exceptionally well, logging a career-high four steals against the Nets on April 16. McDaniels also had a great defensive stat line in his play-in debut against the Pacers on May 18, as he stole the ball twice and blocked a shot in just 16 minutes of action. Following two collegiate seasons at San Diego State, McDaniels was selected by the Hornets with the 52nd overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The rookie made his NBA debut Oct. 25 against the Timberwolves. He played three minutes, posting two points (1-2 FG) and one rebound. Overall, he appeared in 16 games for Charlotte, averaging 5.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.2 blocks in 18.3 minutes. He shot 47.1 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three and 82.4 percent from the free-throw line. McDaniels set single-game career highs of 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two threes, two steals and two blocks. His best performance of the campaign was Feb. 12 against the Timberwolves. In 23 minutes, McDaniels posted 10 points (4-4 FG, 2-2 3Pt), six rebounds, two steals and one assist with no turnovers. McDaniels also appeared in 31 G League games with the Greensboro Swarm. In 32.0 minutes per game there, he averaged 15.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks. He shot 44.3 percent from the field, 38.6 percent from three and 82.8 percent from the free-throw line.
