Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Ingles was born in Happy Valley, Australia in 1987. He attended the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, where he grew his talent acumen in the game of basketball while following regimented training schedules and rules. On the international level, Ingles has competed in nine tournaments with the Australian National Team, representing his country in the Olympic Games of 2008, 2012 and 2016. At the Rio Games in 2016, Ingles averaged 7.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the Kangaroos. Ingles is passionate about growing the game of basketball in Australia, and in 2016, he participated in the first Basketball Without Borders event in Australia alongside teammate Dante Exum. You can follow Ingles on Twitter and Instagram (@Joeingles7). Ingles played for the South Dragons from 2006-09 in the National Basketball League in Australia. He was named the NBL Rookie of the Year for the 2006-07 season, where he averaged 15.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. In his final season with the Dragons, Ingles was named to the All-NBL third team. He led the team in three-point baskets (72), was second in assists per game (3.6) and third in scoring (13.1 ppg). Ingles played for the Australian National Team during the 2008 Olympics and the 2010 FIBA World Championships. He also spent time with the Spanish club CB Granada of the Liga ACB. He averaged 13.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists in the 2009-10 Liga ACB season. Ingles then moved on to EuroLeague, playing from 2010 to 2013 for FC Barcelona before helping Maccabi Tel Aviv to the 2013-14 championship. He started in 13 of Maccabi Tel Aviv's games and averaged 6.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists that season. Ingles was not selected in the 2009 NBA Draft and would sign with a Spanish club, CB Granada of the Liga ACB.

FMinnesota Timberwolves
July 3, 2024
Ingles agreed to a one-year deal with the Timberwolves on Wednesday, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Ingles spent the 2023-24 campaign in Orlando, but the Magic recently turned down his $11 million team option for the 2024-25 season. Over 68 regular-season appearances in 2023-24, he averaged 4.4 points, 3.0 assists and 2.1 rebounds in 17.2 minutes per game. He should have a chance to carve out consistent minutes off the bench while serving as a veteran presence during his age-37 season.

Coming off an ACL injury, Ingles played a key role for the Bucks last season, serving as a nice floor-spacer, with the ability to handle the ball at times. In 22.7 minutes per game, he averaged 6.9 points to go with 3.3 assists, 0.7 steals and 1.8 three-pointers. Despite his encouraging play, Milwaukee parted ways with Ingles in the offseason, allowing him to sign with the Magic. While he doesn't fit their timeline, Ingles could certainly carve out a regular spot in the rotation, providing the team with a veteran presence both on and off the court. Given he hasn't had significant fantasy appeal since the 2020-21 season, it's hard to see Ingles as anything more than a speculative streaming option. Even then, managers are likely going to want to target a player with more upside.
Having torn his ACL in February, Ingles is set to miss a significant chunk of the season, making him an undraftable player in just about every format. When he does make it back to the court, he will find himself in a Bucks uniform, likely providing some floor spacing off the bench. Now aged 35, there is very little reason to think he can be anything more than a role player on a team striving for their second championship in three years.
After a down year scoring in 2019-20, Ingles bounced back up to double-digits last season. The veteran averaged 12.1 points, 4.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 27.9 minutes per contest. He also continued his excellent shooting with splits of 49/45/84. That allowed him to rank 103rd in per-game fantasy production -- better than 2019-20 but significantly worse than his peak of 62nd in 2017-18. He's settled nicely into a sixth-man role, and Ingles' diverse offensive skillset allows him to play multiple positions, including point guard when needed. That also means he's often the first player to see increased usage when a teammate is injured. The yo-yoing role can sometimes mean inconsistent fantasy production, however, and he's often not worthy of a starting spot on a standard fantasy team when he's coming off the bench. That dynamic shouldn't change in 2021-22, as the Jazz made no significant changes in the offseason. As a result, Ingles can continue to be drafted outside pick 100, though with his ceiling relying significantly on other players getting injured, he's more suited for deep leagues.
In his sixth season, Ingles averaged 9.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists while knocking down 2.0 triples. Aside from the assists, all of these numbers were three-year lows, as were his minutes per game (29.7). Ingles maintained his solid shooting by posting 44.5/39.9/78.7 splits, percentages consistent with his career averages. Due to extended periods of absence from Mike Conley, Ingles started 52 games, and while his numbers were improved in those contests, his production still declined from his previous two seasons. The continued ascension of Donovan Mitchell and career numbers from Bojan Bogdanovic prior to his season-ending wrist surgery accounted for Ingles' decline in productivity in 2019-20. He achieved these deflated numbers with Mike Conley out for a majority of the campaign, and with Conley expected to be fully healthy for the new season, Ingles' chance of improving on his stats isn't extremely encouraging. He can still be picked up near the end of fantasy drafts as a three-point specialist with the added bonus of some solid ancillary stats and above-average shooting.
Ingles put up a career-best 12.1 points over 82 contests last year, once again showcasing his durability and ability to pack the stat sheet on a nightly basis. He also finished 14th in the league in total assists by averaging 5.7 dimes, which is another career-high. There's no doubt that Ingles struggled to shoot the basketball from beyond the arc in comparison to recent years, sinking 39.1 percent of his attempts compared to a combined 44.0 percent over the prior two seasons. That said, he still averaged 2.3 made threes per matchup, and he owns an impressive 40.8 percent 3-point clip for his career, which is good enough for 20th all-time. Despite experiencing a down shooting year across the board, there's no reason to believe he won't have an opportunity to bounce back in the upcoming season, as he's expected to remain in a key role for the Jazz, though his opportunity for assists may decrease with the addition of Mike Conley. Ingles has also proven to be a fantasy asset by remaining healthy. He's played all 82 games in each of the last three seasons and has missed just four total games over his five-year career.
Through his first three years in the league, Ingles had drawn 60 starts and seen 20.2 minutes per game. That changed in 2017-18, as Ingles started all but one of his 82 appearances and garnered 31.4 minutes per contest. He’s turned into one of the league’s top three-point marksmen, shooting 44.0 percent from deep over the past two seasons and ranking 10th in made threes last season. While he racked up just 11.5 points per game last year, Ingles’ all-around skillset and nearly spotless health (four missed games in his career) has turned him into a true Fantasy asset, as he also averaged 4.8 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.1 steals. He has occasional big-game potential as well, posting four double-doubles (points, assists) and seven games with at least three steals in 2017-18. The Jazz didn't make any threatening additions in the offseason, so it seems safe to assume Ingles will have the same role this season.
Ingles, appropriately nicknamed “Slow Mo Joe”, makes up for what he lacks in athleticism through craftiness and three-point marksmanship. Though he started just 26 of the 82 games he appeared in last season, he earned himself a four-year, $52 million extension over the summer by being one of the most reliable cogs in the Jazz machine. His ability to play shooting guard through power forward at 6-foot-8 gave him plenty of opportunites to make an impact off the bench, as he posted 7.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals across 24.0 minutes per game. Ingles also shot 45.2 percent from the field and made 1.5 threes per game at a blistering-hot 44.1 percent clip. With Gordon Hayward no longer in the fold, Ingles will likely see an increased workload, possibly topping 30 minutes per game. The Jazz are very new-look heading into next season and it’s tough to tell how much the team will lean on Ingles, though it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which his usage rate and workload both decline. As a result, Ingles’ Fantasy stock will almost undoubtedly rise for the 2017-18 campaign. He doesn’t have much star potential, but has shown an ability to accumulate a nice grab bag of stats on a regular basis, making him a solid mid-tier Fantasy option.
Ingles is coming off an unexpected rookie season where he started in 32 games and ultimately averaged 21 minutes per outing after a total of 79 appearances for the Jazz. It took significant injuries to both Alec Burks (shoulder) and Rodney Hood (foot) for Ingles to join the starting five, but he excelled during his time on the court, which earned him a two-year contract in the offseason and leaves him with an outside shot of being one of coach Quin Snyder's five starters when the season starts anew this October. The newfound health of Burks and Hood could prevent that from manifesting, however, but Ingles helped the Jazz to a 16-16 record during the games where he started, which was a slight improvement since the Jazz ended the year at 38-44. Although, the Australian has seemingly more value as a glue guy than anything else, finishing his first year in the NBA with averages of just 5.0 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.9 steals, 0.1 blocks, and 0.9 three pointers. Looking ahead, he'll most likely defer to Burks and Gordon Hayward while competing for playing time with the likes of Rodney Hood and Elijah Millsap. Regardless of how the season shakes out for Ingles, he's lumped into that small handful of players who are an asset to the team but who don't provide much in the way of box score figures at the end of the night.

Chemistry in Minnesota
FMinnesota Timberwolves
October 1, 2024
Ingles cherished the opportunity to join his former teammates Mike Conley and Rudy Gobert in Minnesota, saying it "wasn't something he wanted to pass on" despite his family remaining in Orlando, Fawzen Amer of the SixthManShow reports.
ANALYSIS
Ingles spent just one season in Orlando, but noted his family "will be natives there for a while." The 37-year-old spent the first eight years of his NBA career in Utah after remaining overseas for the first five years of his post-draft career, capped by a EuroLeague championship in 2013-14. He and Rudy Gobert were teammates in all eight campaigns with the Jazz, with Mike Conley overlapping for three of those seasons.
