The first Saturday of training camp was a fairly slow news day, but here are a few items that came across the wire.
With multiple players testing positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week, Matthew Stafford joined them on the reserve/COVID-19 list, meaning he either tested positive, or he was in close proximity to someone who had it. Keep checking in at Rotowire for more information as it becomes available.
In good news out of Browns' camp, David Njoku is no longer requesting a trade by tweeting, "I'm all in Cleveland. Time to work." Look for the fourth-year TE to see significant snaps as Cleveland is expected to use a great deal of personnel packages that feature two tight ends, but Austin Hooper is expected to see more snaps while likely seeing significantly more targets. It's unlikely that Njoku functions as more than a low-end TE2.
After signing a one-year deal with the Patriots this offseason, Marqise Lee opted out of the 2020 season. Although he was typically going undrafted in most fantasy leagues, he certainly could've emerged as a factor in three-receiver sets, but now he'll go into his age-29 season in 2021 having appeared in just six games since the 2017 season.
Although he was considered by many to be the frontrunner for the No. 3 WR role with the Chargers, the team waived Andre Patton, which will potentially open the door for 2020 fifth-round pick Joe Reed and third-year veteran Jalen Guyton. It would seem that the most likely scenario would have multiple WRs rotating in the available role until a point in time in which someone emerges as the frontrunner. It's unlikely that either of the current Chargers' receivers aside from Keenan Allen and Mike Williams will merit more than a late-round flyer in fantasy drafts
We'll close out this edition of Training Camp Notes by moving over to New York, where the Jets defense took a significant hit when LB C.J. Mosley opted out of the 2020 season. After missing 14 games last year after suffering a groin injury, the team was looking forward to his return, but now they'll have to wait until next year when he enters the third year of a five-year contract. In IDP leagues, either Patrick Onwuasor or Neville Hewitt will move into a more significant role, and whichever one becomes the starter will be worth a roster spot in leagues that require teams to roster multiple LBs per squad.
