2025 Fantasy Outlook
Watson's NFL future is as murky as it gets. He ruptured his right Achilles tendon Week 7 last year and then re-tore it three months later, undergoing a second surgery in January that makes him unlikely to play before the second half of the 2025 campaign. Watson played poorly last season prior to the Achilles injury, coming off a shoulder injury the year before. He threw multiple TD passes once (against the Giants) and failed to throw a TD in three games. He never topped 200 passing yards, with his 5.3 YPA ranking last among 39 QBs with at least 200 attempts. The Browns signed Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and drafted Dillon Gabriel (third round) and Shedeur Sanders (fifth round), but they still have enough invested in Watson to consider starting him if/when he's healthy. WR Jerry Jeudy returns, and the team drafted TE Harold Fannin to join veteran tight end David Njoku. Beyond that, however, it's a lackluster receiving group. Watson has played just 19 games the last four years. How many more games he plays is quite uncertain. Read Past Outlooks
Progressing, but return on hold
Coach Kevin Stefanski noted Wednesday that he had "no real update" on Watson (Achilles) "other than he's doing a great job with his rehab," Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
While Watson -- who suffered a right Achilles tendon rupture in Week 7 last season and then underwent an additional surgery in January to address the issue -- is eligible to have his practice window opened, the expectation is that the QB is still weeks away from that possibly happening. With the Browns having traded Kenny Pickett in August and Joe Flacco last Tuesday, rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are the only signal-callers currently on the team's active roster, while Bailey Zappe is a member of the practice squad.

The bars represents the team's percentile rank (based on QB Rating Against). The longer the bar, the better their pass defense is. The team and position group ratings only include players that are currently on the roster and not on injured reserve. How do Deshaun Watson's measurables compare to other quarterbacks?
This section compares his draft workout metrics with players at the same position. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that metric and it would be considered average.

For the second season in a row, Watson was limited to six games last year. This time it was shoulder injuries, including a fracture that ended his season Week 10. Watson's stats were near copies of the poor numbers he produced the year before. His 69.0 percent on-target rate was less than a percentage point higher than in 2022, ranking 31st among QBs with at least 170 attempts. His YPA was the same 6.5 (28th). The difference was he stretched the field last year. His average target depth jumped two full yards to 9.2 (3rd), and 12.9 percent of his attempts traveled at least 20 yards (3rd) after just 5.3 percent (35th) in 2022. It amounted to more than two extra deep shots per game. Not that it changed much -- Watson had only 13 more yards than the year before and the same number of TD passes (seven). Perhaps he'll get back to pushing the ball downfield this season like during his glory years in Houston when his average target depth was 9.0 yards and he actually completed the passes at a high rate. He at least has an excellent collection of playmakers to make things happen. The Browns traded for Jerry Jeudy to join wide receivers Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore, tight end David Njoku and running back Nick Chubb. Watson's rushing has remained steady the last two years (26.5 rush yards per game, prorating to 450 for a full season), so if he gets the passing going there's still a chance to be some semblance of the dynamic QB he was for his first four years.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could get in mix for starts
The Browns could turn to Watson as their starting quarterback if he is medically cleared, Albert Breer of SI.com suggests.
ANALYSIS
Watson is recovering from an Achilles tear but is hoping to be medically cleared in the next few weeks. It would be surprising if Watson ever retakes the field for Cleveland, but neither Dillon Gabriel nor Shedeur Sanders has proven yet that they are the long-term answer at quarterback for the team. If the Browns agree with that assessment and Watson looks good in his return to practice, that could create a path for him to regain his starting job at some point.
