The No. 3 quarterback in Cleveland to begin last season, Sanders moved up the depth chart to eventually take the starting job by Week 12 after the trade of Joe Flacco and the injury and ineffectiveness of fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Sanders had one big game against bottom-feeder Tennessee, and then just one other game with more TD passes than interceptions. Although an accurate collegiate passer, Sanders finished last in the league (min. 200 attempts) in both on-target percentage (63.7) and completion percentage (56.6) last year. He will compete with Gabriel, Deshaun Watson and sixth-round pick Taylen Green for QB snaps in Cleveland, where it's a virtual lock that more than one player will make starts. Cleveland’s offseason overhaul might actually give the quarterbacks a better chance to succeed. The Browns have five new offensive line starters, including first-round pick Spencer Fano, and they also took wide receivers KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston within the first 40 picks of the 2026 NFL Draft. New head coach Todd Monken thus takes over a young offense, with TE Harold Fannin and RB Quinshon Judkins (both second-year pros) by far the best returning weapons. It could be a decent situation for fantasy production within a year or two, but Sanders may not even be in the mix for starts by then. Will play first half in second preseason game
Sanders and Deshaun Watson will split first-team reps during joint practices ahead of the Browns' second preseason game against the Bills on Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sanders is set to start and play throughout the first half in that contest, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com reports.

Watson drew the start in Saturday's preseason opener against the Bears and outperformed Sanders, the latter of whom completed 6 of 11 pass attempts for 79 yards and an interception while adding two carries for three yards in a 34-10 loss. Sanders' interception came early in the fourth quarter, when he overthrew his intended receiver. Sanders will start against Buffalo next week, and the plan is to have him play in the first half while Watson opens the third quarter and Dillon Gabriel gets work in the final period.

Sanders’ fall was the story of the draft, with various theories offered to explain why. In a nutshell, his slide to the fifth round means the league believes his raw talent isn't overwhelming enough to overcome his flaws, making him a likely backup at best. Sanders had an FBS-high 74.0 completion percentage last season, and he threw 64 touchdowns against just 13 interceptions during two seasons as Colorado's starter. He’s an accurate passer, but with merely average arm strength, and he's surprisingly slow for the son of Deion Sanders. Even so, Cleveland’s QB situation gives Sanders a chance to start. Dillon Gabriel, the Browns’ third-round pick, is undersized and without an elite trait. Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett are the veteran options, at least until Deshaun Watson returns from Achilles' surgery (which may not happen until late in the season, if at all). The situation gives Sanders a shot at Year 1 playing time despite his draft-day slide, but arm strength and mobility look like limiting factors for fantasy value even if he proves competent as a pro.
