2024 Fantasy Outlook
Edwards has his limitations, both in terms of skill set and durability, but there's a reason the Harbaughs love him anyway. Even without catching passes, Edwards has obvious value thanks to his powerful running and snap-to-snap consistency. He averaged at least 5.0 yards per carry in each of his first four seasons with the Ravens, and his drop to 4.1 YPC last year was partially a result of getting so much goal-line work (which led to 13 TDs, half of his career total). The 29-year-old will face physical decline soon enough, but he's set up nicely for the upcoming season as he reunites with former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who now holds the same job under Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles. The Chargers signed Edwards to a two-year, $9 million contract with $3.75 million guaranteed, later adding Baltimore backfield mate J.K. Dobbins (Achilles) on a smaller one-year deal and then Kimani Vidal in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. All signs point to Edwards being the Week 1 starter and goal-line back for what figures to be the most run-oriented Chargers offense in a long time. Read Past Outlooks

Being eased back in
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said that Edwards (undisclosed) went through individual drills during Wednesday's practice, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Harbaugh added that Edwards underwent an unspecified offseason procedure, and as a result, the Chargers plan to give the running back a "longer runway" in terms of being a full participant in practice. As the coming season approaches, Daniel Popper of The Athletic has suggested that Edwards, when available, profiles as the team's lead back, with J.K. Dobbins, Kimani Vidal and Isaiah Spiller in the mix for complementary touches. Given that Edwards hasn't been involved as a pass catcher during his career, he'll make most of his fantasy impact in early-down and goal-line situations, a context that could lead to PPR utility for whomever emerges as the team's top change-of-pace option.

Edwards has been Mr. Automatic for Baltimore when healthy, both off the bench and in several spot starts when J.K. Dobbins was unavailable. Edwards was limited to nine games last year after missing the previous season with an ACL tear, but the reliable power runner still averaged 5.0 yards per carry, a mark he's hit every season. The arrival of new offensive coordinator Todd Monken could complicate his role, though. Prior coordinator Greg Roman's scheme featured a lot of runs from heavy packages with FB Patrick Ricard, which suited Edwards fine because he's much more adept as a runner than receiver. With Monken expected to open the passing game, though, Edwards will need to demonstrate value as a blocker and pass catcher. Dobbins' superiority there would be a problem for Edwards' snap count if the Ravens run less, as expected. In the last year of his contract, following a paycut, Edwards also faces mounting durability concerns after dealing with hamstring troubles following his Week 7 return last year from the 2021 ACL tear.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
![LAC](https://content.rotowire.com/images/teamlogo/football/100LAC.png?v=8)
Likely to open season as starter
Edwards will likely begin the 2024 season as the Chargers' starting running back, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com .
ANALYSIS
Rosenthal mentions that the Chargers referred to Edwards as a "bell cow" when they signed him in free agency, and Edwards likely won't require much of an acclimation period with his new team since the Chargers also brought in offensive coordinator Greg Roman, under whom Edwards played with the Ravens. Fellow former Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins will likely be brought along slowly in his recovery from a torn Achilles, while rookie sixth-round draft pick Kimani Vidal is unlikely to challenge Edwards for the starting role right away.
