                2025 Fantasy Outlook

Fumbles have always been an issue for Ekeler, but at his peak with the Chargers he was so good at gaining yards and scoring TDs that it was tolerable. He mostly remained effective in 2024, his age-29 season and first year with Washington, but four fumbles on 146 touches (including playoffs) is probably not an acceptable figure. As much as Ekeler proved he remains a uniquely dangerous pass catcher in particular - an eight-catch, 89-yard game against Philadelphia in Week 11 showed that part of Ekeler's game remains intact - fumbling at the rate he did in 2024 is nonetheless a good way to lose playing time. The Commanders traded Brian Robinson to San Francisco this preseason, but that won't necessarily put Ekeler in an expanded role, as the team reportedly has high hopes for rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt and third-year pro Chris Rodriguez. It'll likely be a committee backfield, with Ekeler's role perhaps not quite as secure as it seems due to his issues with ball security. Officially on injured reserve
The Commanders officially placed Ekeler (Achilles) on injured reserve Monday.
				ANALYSIS
Ekeler went down while running a route in the flat in the fourth quarter of Thursday's loss in Green Bay. After undergoing the necessary tests, a torn Achilles was confirmed, wiping out the rest of his 2025 campaign. Rookie seventh-rounder Jacory Croskey-Merritt is expected to take on a good portion of the early-down work, but Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez also are on hand to mix in.

The bars represents the team's percentile rank (based on QB Rating Against). The longer the bar, the better their pass defense is. The team and position group ratings only include players that are currently on the roster and not on injured reserve. The list of players in the table only includes defenders with at least 3 attempts against them.

Perhaps Ekeler has lost a step, but it's difficult to tell strictly from 2023. Badly as Ekeler's numbers declined, regression would have been predictable if one knew ahead of time that Ekeler would suffer a high-ankle sprain early in the year and that QB Justin Herbert would miss four games and play many of the others with a broken finger on his throwing hand. The Chargers offense collapsed, and it fell hard on Ekeler in particular. Now in Washington on a two-year, $8.4 million contract, Ekeler should have better circumstances in 2024, though it's not clear to what degree. Not just that, but Ekeler is 29 years old now, so even if physical decline wasn't one of the main causes of his 2023 struggles it could still happen any time now. He should stay a little more spry with Brian Robinson and Chris Rodriguez taking most of the power-rushing workload in Washington under new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, perhaps opening the door for Ekeler to recapture some of his magic as a pass catcher for rookie QB Jayden Daniels. The days of fantasy dominance are likely gone, with Ekeler not even assured of getting goal-line carries despite his established TD-scoring prowess.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Gets green light for Week 2
Ekeler doesn't carry an injury designation into Thursday's game against the Packers after being limited by a shoulder injury in practice.
				ANALYSIS
Ekeler popped up on the injury report after Washington's season-opening win over the Giants, which can be a worrisome sign on a short week, but Ekeler will be available to play against Green Bay. He had six carries and three catches in Week 1 as the top backfield option in passing situations while Jacory Croskey-Merritt handled early-down work. The workload distribution could shift more in Ekeler's favor if the Commanders fall behind and need to pass to catch up against the Packers after Washington cruised to victory against the Giants.
