2023 Fantasy Outlook
Garoppolo began last season as the backup to Trey Lance in San Francisco only to take over in Week 2 when Lance suffered a season-ending injury. The same fate hit Garoppolo a couple months later when a foot injury in Week 13 ended his season. In between, he was the same Jimmy G we’ve come to expect -- a high completion percentage (5th) thanks to a lot of short passes (2nd) and few deep shots (26th), with an average target depth of 7.1 yards (27th). The Raiders guaranteed $34 million for that skill set and reunited the game manager with coach Josh McDaniels, for whom he played in New England from 2014-16. Garoppolo at least has Davante Adams to target, and the Raiders also signed WR Jakobi Meyers, who had 804 yards and six touchdowns in New England last year. Hunter Renfrow is still around as the slot guy, while the team signed TE Austin Hooper and drafted TE Michael Mayer in Round 2 after trading Darren Waller to the Giants. It's a decent supporting cast, but the Raiders also want to run the ball with Josh Jacobs, and Garoppolo won't add rushing stats of his own (225 career yards, seven TDs). There are better QB2 options. Read Past Outlooks

Could be released without penalty
Garoppolo's three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders contains a clause that would allow Las Vegas to release him without penalty if he's unable to pass a physical due to his surgically repaired foot, Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur of The Athletic report.
ANALYSIS
Garoppolo fractured his left foot while playing with the 49ers in early December, then underwent surgery in March, shortly after he finalized his contract with Las Vegas. According to a waiver and release clause in the deal, Garoppolo acknowledged the risk of further injury while continuing to play upon his return from surgery, and he also waived any responsibility on the part of the Raiders, who can terminate his contract with no further obligation or financial ramifications. The waiver becomes null and void if Garoppolo passes a physical at any point during the 2023 season, however. While the terms of the deal give the Raiders an easy out to move on from Garoppolo if his recovery doesn't proceed as anticipated, the team won't have much in the way of appealing alternatives. The Raiders are left with 37-year-old journeyman Brian Hoyer, fourth-round rookie Aidan O'Connell and 2022 undrafted free agent Chase Garbers as the other signal-callers on the roster. Meanwhile, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Teddy Bridgewater and Joe Flacco are the most experienced options among an uninspiring crop of quarterbacks on the free-agent market.

Backup QBs are going later in Underdog's 18-round tournaments than the 20-round Board tournaments, but the high-upside QB1s are going earlier than ever.

Rashee Rice isn't the only Chiefs wide receiver moving up draft boards this May. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are slipping with WRs becoming more popular in the early rounds.

Jerry Donabedian compares May ADP results from four different best ball sites and finds that young WRs tend to be cheapest on DraftKings.

Garoppolo held off third overall pick Trey Lance last season, but the veteran's fate for this year
was probably sealed when he threw an interception with a minute to play in the NFC
Championship Game. The 30-year-old threw 20 TD passes in 15 games last season and his 8.6 YPA ranked second in
the league. But the reason he had the second-highest on-target rate (78.9 percent) is he didn't
throw deep much - just 37 attempts (8.4 percent) went 20-plus yards. After re-upping with the 49ers for one more season in late August, Garoppolo is now slated to be a well-compensated backup to Lance.
