We have a busy day of preseason football Saturday, with several games kicking off at 1 p.m. EDT and 7 p.m. Although there is actually one more game in the afternoon, the larger prize pool and wider selection of tournaments is for the latter contest. For that reason, the 7 pm slate will be our focus.
Roster Strategy
Both DraftKings and FanDuel DFS lineups consist of one QB, two RBs, three WRs, one TE, one flex (RB/WR/TE) and one DST unit. DraftKings uses PPR scoring with bonuses for 100-yard receiving or rushing performances and 300-yard passing games, while FanDuel has 0.5 PPR scoring. All players have the same salary cap hit in preseason DFS contests, so this format is all about finding the highest-scoring fantasy players rather than balancing production against cost.
Quarterback
Joe Milton vs. BAL
Milton is in line to play the majority of Sunday's game as the Cowboys seek to make sure he is as comfortable in the offense as possible while serving as Dak Prescott's backup. Milton doesn't necessarily have the most practical skillset – he has a rocket arm but struggles with going through his progressions, for example – but that's less likely to matter in the preseason. Volume should be on his side and he's a reasonable threat both with his arm and legs.
Stetson Bennett vs. LAC
Bennett has gotten stronger reviews this training camp and preseason relative to his first two years as a pro. The real reason for playing him, however, is the state of the Rams' quarterback room. Matthew Stafford's health appears to be truly in question, so the team is likely to be very careful with Jimmy Garoppolo. That leaves Bennett to carry a heavy workload Sunday, and he should at least have an improved chance of translating that into meaningful production.
Also Consider: Adrian Martinez at NYG
Running Back
Cody Schrader vs. LAC
Jarquez Hunter and Blake Corum were both busy in the Rams' first preseason game, but I'd expect their workloads to be ramped down this weekend after showing the team what it needed to see. That would open the door for Schrader to see more work, a good pairing with the explosiveness he showed last week and during his collegiate career.
D'Ernest Johnson at DAL
Keaton Mitchell may be unavailable after missing practice early in the week, but he is another back who probably showed everything he needed to last weekend. D'Ernest Johnson is with the Ravens to provide depth in the preseason, and he should do just that Saturday by soaking up a lot of carries in the later portions of the game.
Donovan Edwards at NYG
We're sticking with the same theme/theory with the Jets. Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis are locked in as the No. 2 and No. 3 running backs on the Jets' depth chart and showed well enough last weekend to have their workloads scaled back. Now could be a chance for the team to see of the players battling for a roster spot, with Edwards being a primary option.
Wide Receiver
Lil'Jordan Humphrey vs. NYJ
Humphrey is likely right on the border of a roster spot with the Giants and should get a long look once again. He led the wide receiver corps with 38 offensive snaps in Week of the preseason and commanded four targets. Others out-played him, but it's worth valuing snaps and playing time with the hope that the stats will follow.
Rakim Jarrett/Ryan Miller at PIT
Jarrett and Miller are battling for a reserve spot on the Buccaneers' depth chart, which makes them both intriguing. Miller was the more productive in the first week of preseason, but both were on the field for right around half of offensive snaps. Ether is a good choice Saturday night.
Ryan Flournoy vs. BAL
Flournoy led the Cowboys in targets in Week 1 of the preseason and was on the field for the second-most snaps of any of the wide receivers. That didn't translate to much production, but he should get significant run once again as another player on the roster bubble.
Xavier Weaver/Tejhaun Palmer at DEN
Weaver and Palmer are yet another duo vying for back-end roster spots. They both played a ton in the first week of the preseason and it's reasonable to expect that to remain the case. The other case for Cardinals' pass catchers is the likelihood that the top skill-position players sit after playing in Week 1 of the preseason, consolidating targets for the depth players.
Tight End
Oronde Gadsden at LAR
Gadsden is exactly what we want from a fantasy tight end. He isn't much of a blocker but is an athletic pass catcher that is capable of putting up yardage in bunches. Gadsden's blocking could prevent him from making an impact during the regular season, but that should matter much less in the preseason.
Thomas Fidone vs. NYJ
Fidone is a poor man's version of Gadsden as he was productive in college and tested well at the combine. He was targeted three times in his pro debut last weekend, which is decent for the position during the preseason.
Defense/Special Teams
Los Angeles Rams vs. Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have been a team to target this preseason and that doesn't change this week. We'll get a brief cameo from Justin Herbert, but the trio of Taylor Heinicke, Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei is very mistake-prone.
