Contract with Saints plays out
WRFree Agent
January 16, 2023
White's (illness) practice squad contract with the Saints expired Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
White moved back and forth between New Orleans' practice squad and active roster while filling in for the team's injury-riddled receiving corps from Weeks 6 to 12. He then popped up with an illness shortly before getting waived Dec. 5, and he finished his second campaign with the Saints on the practice squad. White thus finished his age-30 season with two receptions (on five targets) for 74 yards, and he'll likely look to carve out a similar reserve role with a team this offseason.

Certainly, the Bears organization would like to see a player they selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2015 draft bear fruit, but their roster moves this offseason indicate they're prepared to move on. With the free-agent additions of Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel along with 2018 second-rounder Anthony Miller, it appears that White could be in danger of claiming a roster spot. The good news is offseason reports have stated that White has looked good during workouts, but for a player who's played in just five games while catching a total of 21 passes for 193 yards, he'll have a lot to prove before having much of a shot of earning significant playing time. Unless he has an exceptionally strong training camp, he's not a player who's likely worth a draft pick in most fantasy leagues.
The No. 7 overall pick in 2015, White hasn't been able to stay on the field. After missing his rookie year entirely with a broken right tibia, White managed four games last year, missing the rest with a broken fibula in the same leg. When he did play, White was inefficient -- 9.8 YPC, 5.2 YPT, only one catch of 20-plus yards and no touchdowns on 36 targets. At 6-3, 216, with a 4.35 40 time and an impressive broad jump and vertical leap, White is as athletic as any WR in the league. In April, White participated in the team's voluntary offseason program, and he will potentially share targets with Markus Wheaton and Kendall Wright. The quality of those targets -- from the winner of the Mike Glennon-Mitchell Trubisky competition -- is another matter, but White should have a major opportunity should he finally stay healthy.
White's rookie season was over before it started, thanks to a lingering shin injury suffered in the spring. Now healthy, the seventh overall pick is a physical specimen, checking in at 6-3, 217 and running a blazing 4.35 40, a rare clip for a player his size. White also posted impressive vertical leap and broad jump numbers, but had only one big season in college and underwhelmed before his senior year. Nonetheless, he's expected to step in and start right away opposite Alshon Jeffery, providing quarterback Jay Cutler with two massive targets, both of which can make plays down the field and in the red zone. While White will begin his career as the team's No. 2, the departure of tight end Martellus Bennett and pass-catching back Matt Forte should ensure a fair share of targets go his way.
While No. 4 overall pick Amari Cooper is a finished product, backed by years of college production, the No. 7 pick White, is an athletic freak. At 6-3, 215, White ran a blazing 4.35 40 at the Combine and posted impressive vertical leap and broad jump numbers. Unlike Cooper, however, White had only one big season in college and underwhelmed before his senior year. Nonetheless, White was being counted on by the Bears to immediately step into a starting role with Brandon Marshall gone, serving as the team's field stretcher and big-play threat while Alshon Jeffery inherited Marshall's role as the top target on intermediate routes and in the red zone. Unfortunately, White's NFL debut will be delayed by surgery to repair a stress fracture in his shin. He's slated to miss the team's first six games, at a minimum, with a season-long absence a realistic possibility. Aside from Jeffery, the Bears have a few other mouths to feed in the passing game with Martellus Bennett proving to be a quality tight end, Matt Forte setting records as a receiver out of the backfield last season, and the newly signed Eddie Royal manning the slot, but White does have the talent to make a splash upon his return to full health. It's also an open question whether new coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase can salvage the remains of quarterback Jay Cutler -- among the 36 QBs with 200 or more passing attempts, Cutler was 32nd with 6.8 YPA last year.
