Selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft as the fifth tight end taken in what was seen as a very deep class at the position, Schoonmaker has the size (6-5, 251) and athleticism to be a solid blocker on the line while contributing as a receiver at the sticks. That's the template the Cowboys have been using at the position ever since Jason Witten left, and while Dalton Schultz's departure this offseason does open up the starting spot, Schoonmaker will have to beat out second-year player Jake Ferguson, who offers similar size and has shown some chemistry in the passing game with Dak Prescott, for the job. Rehabbing from shoulder surgery
Schoonmaker (shoulder) is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and is expected to be ready for training camp, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
