NFL Box Score Breakdown: Week 4 Snaps, Routes & Personnel Usage

There have been at least a handful of occasions over the past few seasons when the intro to this article warned that I wouldn't be able to provide the usual quantity of analysis/observations. Invariably, I ended up writing the normal amount anyway, even if it required adult diapers and a 100 percent Soylent diet to maximize efficiency (#grindset).

This week, I'll actually have to shorten the article (for real, this time), because I'm travelling for my sister's wedding. The good news is that you'll still find all of the same statistics below, and I'll still hit key situations with the usual level of analysis. What you'll see far less of is the usual "checking in" on players/situations where nothing much changed between Week 3 and Week 4.

Stat Table Key

Weekly stats (first six columns)

  • Snap = % of team snaps that player was on the field for
  • Route = route share (routes run / QB dropbacks)
  • RUSHING = rushing line
  • RECEIVE = receiving line
  • Tgt = targets
  • AY = Air Yards

2025 Season Stats (final five columns)

  • Sn'25 = snap share for the season
  • Rt'25 = route share for the season
  • TPRR = Targets per Route Run
  • TS = Percentage of team's targets
  • AYS = Percentage of team's air yards

The final five columns of each stat table below (written in italics) show numbers for the entire season. Bold lettering denotes especially strong marks relative to positional standards. Green lettering

  • RB Kenneth Walker got 52% snap share, 31% route share and 21 of 35 RB opportunities, with Zach Charbonnet at 45% snap share, 41% route share and 14 opps.
    • That's an improvement for Walker relative to Weeks 1-2, when Charbonnet had a 56% to 38% advantage in snap share, with both RBs getting the same number of opportunities.
  • TE Elijah Arroyo had season highs for snap share, route share, targets, yards and air yards, but he didn't actually take much playing time from AJ Barner, instead getting snaps/routes that had gone to No. 3 receiver Tory Horton in previous weeks (partially a product of playing with a lead all night).
    • Barner, meanwhile, scored his first TD of the season, but he's still doing far more pass-blocking than most other TEs, and with only a 14% target rate when he does run a route.

  • RB Trey Benson didn't dominate backfield work the way many were hoping, but he might have dominated the carries in a different game script.
    • Prior to the fourth quarter, Benson took 65% of Arizona's snaps and 11 of the 12 RB opportunities (including all six carries).
    • In the fourth quarter, Emari Demercado took 61% of snaps and got all four of his touches on the night.
  • WR Greg Dortch got a big boost in snaps, routes and targets, due to Zay Jones (concussion) being inactive and the Cardinals using far fewer multi-TE looks than usual.
    • The final score was close, but Arizona played from behind all night, which largely explains a season-high rate for 11 personnel usage (84%).
  • WR Marvin Harrison finished with a strong fantasy line, but only after helping Seattle build a lead with some early mistakes.

  • C Ryan Kelly (concussion) and RT Brian O'Neill (knee) made early exits and didn't return. The Vikings were already playing without LG Donovan Jackson, who is out for multiple weeks after undergoing wrist surgery.
  • I've seen concern about RB Jordan Mason, mostly due to Zavier Scott's eight targets, but that was in extreme game script and Mason still ran a couple more routes.
    • Scott drew eight targets on 19 routes, but nearly all of his playing time came in the hurry-up offense or on third downs. Four of his six catches occurred inside the two-minute warning of the first half.
    • Prior to that final drive before halftime, Mason had taken 81% of snaps and 10 of 12 RB opportunities. The box score for Minnesota's backfield looks much different from Week 3, but it's because the Vikings played a drastically different game, not because the underlying RB roles changed. Of course, there's always some chance that Scott's solid work could earn him more playing time, especially in pseudo-passing situations like 2nd-and-long.
  • WR Jordan Addison jumped right into a near-every-down role, clearing 90% snap/route shares and reaching triple-digit air yards. If you have him on a fantasy team, you're well aware of how close he came to a huge fantasy day in his first week back.
    • That said, the Vikings had huge passing volume against a slow, injury-riddled defense. The big day doesn't erase prior concerns about Addison's team context, especially given that the vast majority of his points occurred on a massively blown coverage where he should've scored a TD but stumbled his way out of one (which ended up cost his team more than a minute of game clock).
  • WR Adam Thielen was merely the No. 4 receiver, which means he can be dropped basically anywhere that he's still rostered (redraft or dynasty).
    • No. 3 receiver scored a short TD late in the game but didn't have any other catches on four targets. He'll likely return to extremely low target rates now that Addison, JJ and Hock are all healthy.

  • National reporters (Schefter, Rapoport, etc.) are useless if they're wrong on stuff like Jaylen Warren in a game that started at 7:30 or 6:30 a.m. for one-fourth of the population of the United States.
    • They're right far more often than they're wrong... But so is anyone else who pays attention to practice participation and coach trends. I'm not sure the sourced reports have a better hit rate than an intelligent person with some free time and common sense.
  • Anyway, RB Kenneth Gainwell took over Warren's role from the week before, getting 77% snap share, 61% route share and 25 of 32 RB opportunities.
    • RB Kaleb Johnson got the remaining work, which didn't include goal-line carries even though he's at least 20 pounds heavier than Gainwell. The Steelers clearly still don't trust Johnson with much.
    • Gainwell played at least 68% of snaps in each quarter. His workload included all three carries inside the 5-yard line, with two of those going for scores.
  • WR DK Metcalf finally broke the big one, but it came on a catch-and-run play. He still has just 26% air-yard share (in an offense with a league-low 4.7 aDOT). It appears he'll need every last drop of that TD deodorant, i.e., he's an obvious 'sell' if you can get value commensurate with his to-date production.
    • The player looks 100 percent fine, but his usage in this offense has been ugly/disappointing, covered up only by a couple of huge plays. I'm still starting Metcalf where I have him, to be clear, but viewing him as a WR3 rather than the WR2 that he's been so far.

  • After Week 2, I noted that only 1.5% of plays in the NFL this season featured a sixth offensive lineman on the field. Over the past two weeks, the number rebounded to 2.7% (similar to last year's rate), with Washington leading the charge. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Arizona also have run at least nine plays with six linemen over the past two weeks.
  • Backfield shares were very similar to those from Week 3, only with Jeremy McNichols picking up a few more snaps from Jacory Croskey-Merritt due to negative game script.
  • WR Deebo Samuel essentially doubled his snap/route rates from the week before, benefitting from both negative game script and Terry McLaurin's absence. It's still worth keeping in mind that Samuel comes with risk of matchup-based freefalls in snap/route share, which isn't really a concern for other wide receivers that we care about in fantasy.
    •  His per-route numbers are the best they've been in years, and he also passes the eye test with flying colors. Just don't make the mistake of viewing Samuel as a "safe" play, even if he's 3/4 on strong fantasy scores so far.
  • WR Chris Moore took nearly all of McLaurin's usual workload as the X receiver, while Jaylin Lane and Luke McCaffrey essentially split the No. 3 receiver role again.
    • McCaffrey scored for a second straight week and looks improved from last year (not a high bar to clear), but there's no sign yet of either he or Lane moving clearly ahead of the other. And this is all with Noah Brown (groin) missing games... it's possible he'll just take the No. 3 job back at some point.
  • This seemed like an opportunity for TE Zach Ertz to get a route/target boost, but he instead had a second straight week right around 70% route share and 3-4 targets.

  • WR Darnell Mooney suffered a hamstring injury and missed the second half.
    • Casey Washington filled in, taking 93% of snaps after halftime, while No. 3 receiver Ray-Ray McCloud got just 18%.
    • The Falcons ran just five plays from 11 personnel after halftime. McCloud was on the field for all five of those, but he again didn't play at all in 12 personnel.
      • This was positive game script, but we've also seen the Falcons using No. 2 TE Charlie Woerner over McCloud in most neutral situations, which wasn't at all the case last season (when ATL was near the top of the league in three-wide usage).
  • Fellow Drake London managers need to thank me. Last week, I commented on a pesky trend of London's target share disappointing (not drastically, but some) when Darnell Mooney was available.
    • In this one, London piled up nearly all of his points in the first half, before Mooney came out of the game. The meaningful difference was that Michael Penix actually played well, finally.
  • RB Bijan Robinson got 82% of snaps and 20 of 28 RB opportunities before the fourth quarter.
    • Tyler Allgeier took 69% of snaps (and eight of his 16 carries, including the TD) in the fourth quarter.

  • WR Quentin Johnston has been out-producing Ladd McConkey all season, and in this one Johnston also put some distance between them in terms of the usage shares.
    • Johnston is now up to 25% target share and 38% air-yard share, which generally would correspond with strong-WR2 production, but in this offense it could mean WR1 status (like it has so far).
    • This has been the most surprising development in the NFL this season, and one I was totally wrong about. I didn't draft McConkey much, but up until this past Sunday my expectation was that he'd still pull ahead eventually. At this point, there's no denying where the fantasy value lies, although I still think McConkey is a sophomore slump rather than a true bust. I'm starting him again next week, but that might be the end of the line.
  • RB Omarion Hampton took 88% of snaps and all 17 RB opportunities, including a 54-yard TD run late in the third quarter.
    • That's two straight games with elite-RB1 numbers in terms of both usage and production.
  • TE Oronde Gadsden only got three targets, after seven the week before, but his route share and snap share rose by about 20 percentage points, mostly at the expense of TE Tyler Conklin and FB Scott Matlock (negative game scripts playing a role there, of course).
  • LT Joe Alt, last year's No. 5 overall pick, left with an ankle injury. The Chargers already lost standout LT Rashawn Slater to a season-ending knee injury in August, and they've been playing without RG Mekhi Becton (concussion) since his early exit in Week 3.

  • The Eagles had around 200 total yards over their first four drives, and finished with exactly 200 total yards (234 if you don't count the safety at the end).
  • There are better days ahead for Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, but a healthier Lane Johnson alone won't make up the difference between last year's offense and this one.
  • TE Dallas Goedert scored his second and third TDs of the season. He hasn't scored more than three in a season since 2021, and he may now get there in October despite missing Week 2.

  • WR Chris Godwin looked rusty/slow, but the usage was best-case scenario, with 81% snap share, 88% route share, 10 targets and 152 air yards.
    • He's one to watch closely in the coming weeks. The Bucs have other options at WR, or at least they will later this season, and there's a real chance Godwin just doesn't have his usual explosiveness in 2025.
  • RB Bucky Irving rebounded from his lost fumble in the third quarter with a 72-yard receiving TD on a scramble drill on the following drive. Rachaad White's boost in playing time was a product of extreme negative game script, with Tampa trailing by multiple scores for most of the afternoon.

  • RB Quinshon Judkins again piled up snaps, touches and yards, even though the Browns played from behind
    • The 'QJ' initials are magic this year. Judkins and Quentin Johnston are the biggest dynasty "winners" of September, and arguably the biggest for redraft as well (Non-Puka/CMC division).
    • Judkins got at least four opportunities in each quarter, and played 57% of snaps in the fourth quarter.
  • The Browns drove down to Detroit's 1-yard line on the opening drive. The first playcall was a Judkins run, stuffed. Then they tried two Flacco sneaks, both stuffed. After that, Judkins ran in a TD from one yard out on fourth down.
  • WR Cedric Tillman left in the second quarter with a hamstring injury. Coach Kevin Stefanski said that both Tillman and return man DeAndre Carter (knee) will miss multiple games.
  • WR Isaiah Bond took 67% of snaps in the second half, with Jamari Thrash (50%), David Njoku (86%), Harold Fannin (83%) and Blake Whiteheart (28%) helping to fill the gap.
    • Five of Bond's six targets came after halftime.
    • Thrash, meanwhile, finished without a target, dropping his TPRR to 10% for the season.

  • Starting cornerbacks D.J. Reed (hamstring) and Terrion Arnold (shoulder) both left in the second half and didn't return. Reed's injury appears more serious at first glance.
  • WR Jameson Williams got a team-high eight targets and league-high 210 air yards, but finished with just two receptions and 37 total yards. He also had another deep target that was cancelled out by a Myles Garrett penalty.
    • I wouldn't get too excited about the usage. Cleveland is consistently near the top of the league in usage of man coverage, including Cover 0 and Cover 1. They used man coverage on 41% of dropbacks in this one, which is something few teams would even approach against the Lions.
  • WR Kalif Raymond was the No. 3 receiver again, running three times as many routes as Isaac TeSlaa. The rookie made it a split for a couple weeks but fell back to No. 4 status in this one.

  • The Panthers really emptied out their bench in the fourth quarter of (yet another) blowout. Curiously, though, Tetairoa McMillan stayed in until the bitter end, after Bryce Young and others were pulled.
  • WR David Moore hurt his elbow on the opening drive and missed the rest of the game, after taking 96% snap share the week before in place of Xavier Legette (hamstring).
    • With Moore out, Brycen Tremayne stepped up for 89% route share and 3-36-0 on four targets.
  • RB Chuba Hubbard got 67% of snaps in the first half but just 30% in the second half. I've commented numerous times the past two years on garbage-time production being a huge part of his profile. It carried over to Weeks 1-2, but now we've seen back-to-back games where Dave Canales was much quicker to sub out Hubbard for Rico Dowdle (and Trevor Etienne) once things got out of hand.
    • Dowdle getting seven carries before halftime is another concern, although two of them came inside the two-minute warning (Hubbard had an 8-5 edge in carries before that).
    • I still like Hubbard as a player, and think he'll have big games, but right now he looks like a high-variance guy rather than the rock that he was for fantasy managers last year. Better production requires the Panthers improving or Dowdle disappearing.

  • RB Rhamondre Stevenson wasn't benched after a two-fumble performance in Week 3. He handled 58% snap share and 58% route share, albeit with just 10 of New England's 25 RB opportunities (40%).
    • A TD saved the fantasy day for TreVeyon Henderson, who got nine touches for 46 yards on 29% snap share. This looks like an ugly, three-way split for fantasy, though Henderson is still the one with upside to truly emerge from the pack (without being handed a large workload due to injuries).
  • WR DeMario Douglas finished fifth among New England's WRs in snaps and routes, while Stefon Diggs shot up to 84% route share after lingering around 60% the previous three weeks.
    • Diggs led the Patriots in routes, targets, air yards and total yards, finally looking the part of a solid fantasy starter. Get him in lineups next week for the Buffalo revenge game, even though it's a tricky matchup.
  • Garbage time was a small factor in snap shares but didn't have much impact on the touches. Antonio Gibson got two carries in the final quarter, and TreVeyon Henderson took one.

    • Marks took five of six snaps on 3rd-and-medium/long, with Dare Ogunbowale getting the other. Essentially, Marks and Chubb had a 50/50 split on early downs, while the rookie largely handled passing situations.
    • In the second half, Chubb touched the ball on three of Houston's first four plays, but Marks ended up with far more work in the third quarter (67% snaps, 8 of 12 RB opps.)
    • In the fourth quarter, it was back to an even split between Chubb and Marks in terms of workload, though it may have seemed otherwise due to Marks making a splash with a 12-yard TD catch early in Q4 and then an 18-yard TD run later in the frame.

  • The Saints kept things close enough to run the ball a lot until the very end. Otherwise, it was kind of the usual picture, albeit with more activity for Rashid Shaheed and less for Juwan Johnson, relative to Weeks 1-3.
    • Alvin Kamara has a shot at the least valuable 1,000-yard rushing season in fantasy history, with his target volume oddly collapsing despite ranking near the very top among RBs in routes run. There is some chance things go better with Tyler Shough under center, whenever that happens.

  • RB Blake Corum taking about one-third of the backfield work has been a thing for a few weeks now. Kyren Williams can't really afford that, considering his target rate remains low and explosive plays few and far between.
  • I may have been wrong that the Rams offense isn't good enough for Puka Nacua to break the catch/yardage records. He has to slow down at some point, if only because defensive coordinators become obsessed with stopping him. Still, the early production and record-level usage gives him a shot at wild stuff like 200 targets or 150 catches.

  • RB Travis Etienne looks great this year, and he had another big game Sunday while taking 21 of the 27 RB opportunities, but his 26% route share (37% for the season) hints at a floor we haven't seen yet. LeQuint Allen get most of the snaps in clear passing situations, and Bhayshul Tuten has been poaching a handful of touches each week.
  • WR Dyami Brown (shoulder) was inactive, following an early exit the week before.

  • WRs Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall both were active after being listed as questionable, but Pearsall aggravated his injury and left the game, while Jennings seemingly also re-aggravated one of his injuries (shoulder/ankle) but played through the fourth quarter.
    • Jennings took 10 of San Francisco's 12 snaps in the final frame, FWIW.
    • With Pearsall taking just 16% of snaps after halftime, Demarcus Robinson got 55% (up from 24% in the first half).

  • WR Luther Burden's Week 3 explosion didn't lead to more playing time in Week 4. Instead, Olamide Zaccheaus bumped up to 71% route share and six targets, putting up 5-41-0.
  • WR Rome Odunze maintained his fantasy-WR1 usage shares and scored his fifth TD of the season, but the past two weeks haven't been as impressive as the first two, and his catch rate is just 57.1 percent.
    • He's definitely taken a step forward since last year, but the huge numbers to date involve some forced usage and good luck. Odunze hasn't been dominant in real life.

  • RB Zamir White was a healthy scratch, with Raheem Mostert stepping into the No. 2 role and Ashton Jeanty finally going off (while playing 85% of snaps, no less).
    • Jeanty got 84% snap share in the first half and 85% in the second.
    • Jeanty played 83% of snaps on first down, 84% on second down and 88% on third down.
    • For fantasy, this was exactly what Jeanty's managers had been waiting for, both in terms of role and production. He lost a fumble, but it was on a fourth-down play where he got smacked in the backfield with no chance to convert.
    • He still didn't get much use through the air, even with a huge route share, but Jeanty scored TDs on both of his targets. His rushing score came from 64 yards out, with Jeanty predictably hitting his stride against a MWC defense in the heart of MWC territory.
  • WR Tre Tucker didn't score three touchdowns.

  • Fire John Harbaugh. Or just deactivate his fob and ghost him. I don't care. Just make it stop.
  • For the record, I don't actually think Lamar Jackson was faking his hamstring injury. But I do think the Ravens are dangerously close to territory where guys start playing only for themselves and their future career prospects, with some of the key veterans potentially trying to wriggle their way out rather than sinking in Captain Harbaugh's ship.
  • TE Mark Andrews got eight targets, but his route share fell below 60% for the first time this season in Isaiah Likely's 2025 debut. Likely had similar snap/route shares but no targets.

  • So much for my theory that Tyquan Thornton wouldn't necessarily be the big loser with Xavier Worthy returning. JuJu Smith-Schuster, meanwhile, led the team in routes and scored a TD.
    • Worthy looked completely unbothered by his shoulder. However, there's still considerable re-injury risk, and then Rashee Rice's return in Week 7.

  • WR Romeo Doubs scored three TDs while leading the team in targets and air yards. His season-long shares aren't much better than in the past, but he's at least startable when Green Bay doesn't have much faith in the other WR options.
    • Dontayvion Wicks, meanwhile, has fallen below 20% TPRR. That experiment seems over, at least for fantasy. His routes are no longer converting to targets at a high rate now that he's on the field a lot more.
    • WR Matthew Golden mostly had an encouraging day, but there was also one play where he caught a screen pass and goofily tried to run all over the place, ending up with a huge loss instead of a small one. The rookie mental mistakes have been a theme (both for Golden and the rest of this class).

  • WR George Pickens and TE Jake Ferguson both ate well in the first game without CeeDee Lamb, who likely will miss another week or three.
    • Pickens is still at just a 20% target rate for the season, but with impressive efficiency and generally playing well in real life. A number above 25% target share may be sustainable for him sans CD.
