Johnson took a few games to acclimate to the NFL level, then got rolling before his rookie campaign was cut short by a Lisfranc injury in his foot. The 2024 fourth-round draft pick out of Penn State recorded at least three catches for 30 yards seven times in an eight-game span prior to sitting out the Giants’ final five games of 2024. Assuming he’s healthy to begin 2025, Johnson projects to pick up where he left off atop Big Blue’s tight end depth chart. The 6-foot-6 Johnson had only one touchdown catch in his rookie campaign for a Giants offense that scored the second-fewest points in the NFL, but he has some untapped red-zone potential, having scored seven TDs in his final college campaign. Undergoes surgery
Giants head coach Brian Daboll said that Johnson underwent surgery Tuesday to address a Lisfranc injury, Patricia Traina of SI.com reports.

The Giants took Johnson, a Penn State product, in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Darren Waller announced his retirement less than two months later, leaving Johnson and 2022 fourth-round draft pick Daniel Bellinger as the team's main receiving threats at tight end. Johnson never had more than 341 receiving yards in a college season, but he used his 6-foot-6, 259-pound frame effectively in the red zone, scoring seven touchdowns in 2023. His 4.57-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine was especially impressive for a player of his size, suggesting Johnson has the physical tools to contribute more as a pass catcher at the NFL level. First, the 23-year-old rookie will need to earn a role, which will partially depend on his blocking.
