Tournament Preview

Rounding out the last event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs is the Wyndham Championship, held at Sedgefield Country Club since 2008 following a 2007 course restoration. Many top players are resting up after the PGA Championship last week, but those like Tiger Woods still vying for a spot in the playoffs will tee it up in hopes of extending their season or securing some level of playing status for next year's wraparound season. The Donald Ross designed par-71 course features three par-5s, 11 par-4s, and four par-3s. The aforementioned Tiger Woods, along with Adam Scott and Brandt Snedeker, headline the field that includes six of the world's top-25 ranked players.

Past Champions at Sedgefield

2014 - Camilo Villegas
2013 - Patrick Reed
2012 - Sergio Garcia
2011 - Webb Simpson
2010 - Arjun Atwal
2009 - Ryan Moore
2008 - Carl Pettersson

Champion's Profile

The list of past champs clearly paints the picture that length is not a major factor in conquering Sedgefield. The par-71 course has 11 par-4 holes, making par-4 scoring a slightly greater emphasis than normal. A strong look at strokes gained tee-to-green is recommended as many past champs are elite in the ball-striking category. In general it's best to avoid players who are pressing to get in the FedEx Cup playoffs and instead target those who've secured a spot and are seeking to improve their standing heading into The Barclays next week.

MY PICKS THIS WEEK

Lower-Risk Cash Game Lineup ($50K Salary Cap)

Brooks Koepka - $10,800
Brandt Snedeker - $10,300
Webb Simpson - $9,500
Boo Weekley - $6,600
Ernie Els - $6,400
Jerry Kelly - $6,400

The safe lineup this week is focused on great ball strikers with recent form and solid histories at Sedgefield. Koepka jumps off the page with his incredible recent form and T38 finish in his first look at Sedgefield last year. Snedeker holds multiple top-5s at this event and has made 6-of-8 cuts here, plus he's coming off a T12 at last week's PGA Championship. Simpson is a hometown horse with top-25s his last five starts, including a win in 2011. Weekley enters in solid form and fits the course mold, although it has only resulted in 3-of-6 made cuts since 2009. Els is also a good fit with 3-of-3 made cuts at Sedgefield including a pair of top-30s. Rounding out the lineup is Jerry Kelly, who has made all five of his cuts at Sedgefield including two top-10s; he also enters with six top-25 finishes since April.

Higher-Risk Tournament Lineup
($50K Salary Cap)

Hideki Matsuyama - $10,900
Justin Thomas - $9,400
Austin Cook - $8,000
Jason Dufner - $7,600
Cameron Smith - $7,400
J.J. Henry - $6,600

Matsuyama is among the class of the field and top-5 in strokes gained tee-to-green on the PGA Tour this season. Justin Thomas is playing great and due for a breakthrough much like Patrick Reed was when he earned his first victory in 2013. Austin Cook has made the most of his opportunities with five top-25s in six PGA Tour starts this season; it's ludicrous to think he wouldn't at least make the cut in a slightly diluted field this week. Dufner is a cut-making machine and trending better recently, plus he posted a top-10 in his last start at Sedgefield in 2012. Cameron Smith has put up some big-time finishes like a top-5 in the U.S. Open and may surprise some folks this week. Lastly, J.J. Henry is now guaranteed a FedEx Cup playoff spot after a win two weeks ago and has a good history of made cuts at this ball-striking venue.
