Tournament Preview

The second round of the FedEx Cup playoffs is this week in Boston at the Dell Technologies Championship. The tournament is being contested once again at TPC Boston. The field has been narrowed to just less than 100 golfers, with the top 70 and ties making it to the weekend. Bombers and shorter hitters have had success on this course. The key this week will be good ball striking, which is no surprise, and making some putts. Also, recent form and momentum will weigh heavily in choosing contenders. The best of the best usually rises in these types of events, so we will make a choice at the top tier and have to find some good value plays toward the bottom to make it fit.

Key Stats to Winning at TPC Boston

Strokes Gained: Tee to Green
Strokes Gained: Putting

Past Champions

2016 - Rory McIlroy
2015 - Rickie Fowler
2014 - Chris Kirk
2013 - Henrik Stenson
2012 - Rory McIlroy

FantasyDraft Picks

Dustin Johnson - $19,200 (7/1)

DJ is atop the list in price for good reason. He not only is No. 1 in OWGR, but won last week at the first playoff event. He had been showing signs that his game was close again and now it is all clicking. I see no reason to pass on Dustin this week. He will use his momentum to push him deeper in the playoffs. He has all the skills needed to win at TPC Boston, and last week was just the beginning of his playoff run.

Webb Simpson - $14,900 (50/1)

Webb is exactly what we are looking for when it comes to recent form and momentum. He was T6 last week at the Northern Trust and third at Wyndham Championship. He is 15th in strokes gained: tee to green on tour and ninth in the field in his last eight rounds. His putter has been hot as well in those same eight rounds, as he ranks sixth in strokes gained: putting. Simpson also won here in 2011.

Jhonattan Vegas - $13,300 (80/1)

Vegas is feeling it. He was T3 last week at the Northern Trust after missing the cut two weeks earlier at the PGA Championship. Before that he had a T17 at WGC-Bridgestone and a win at RBC Canadian Open. It is safe to say it has been a good month or so for Jhonattan. I expect his good form to continue. He is 29th on tour in strokes gained: tee to green on tour, and in the last 24 rounds he is 25th in the field in strokes gained: putting.

Jason Kokrak - $12,900 (125/1)

Kokrak has been trending nicely since his T33 at the PGA Championship. He was T16 at Wyndham and T25 last week at the Northern Trust. In his last 12 rounds he is striking the ball great and getting by with his putter. Kokrak is also a long hitter, which always helps. He has had success at TPC Boston, finishing T8 in 2016 and T16 in 2014. He has shown much to be encouraged by when choosing from this lower price tier.

Harold Varner III - $12,400 (150/1)

We have to take some shots low on the board to fit in the top guys, and Varner appears to be a safe bet. He is definitely coming in with some confidence and good vibes. He played his way in to the playoffs with a T10 at Wyndham and followed that with a T20 at the Northern Trust. He's had solid iron play all season, hitting almost 68 percent of greens in regulation, but has taken the rest of his game up a few notches the last two weeks. He is 15th in SG: tee to green and 29th in SG: putting in the last eight rounds.
