This week's Byron Nelson Championship

Play started in 1944 as the Dallas Open with Byron Nelson winning, 8-under, at the par-71 Lakewood CC. Many, many changes in venues ensued through the years, including two courses until 2007, with TPC-Four Seasons Las Colinas (par-70) surviving.

Byron Nelson issued hand-written player invitations to his tournament and shook hands with all finishing players after 72 holes. In doing this, Nelson showed his appreciation of the players' involvement. Back in those days the big hitters loved to come here.

In his playing days, 1933-1966, Nelson racked up 52 titles, including 11 consecutive wins - still a record. In that run (1945-46) he earned $30,250 - in later days, Tiger Woods won seven straight with earnings of $7,926,480. Woods remains second to Nelson.

Nelson died in 2006 at age 94. The number of highly ranked golfers coming to the Nelson has slowly diminished due to attractive purses, many of which are in Europe at the same time as the Nelson. This year, 11 players ranked in the Official World Golf Rankings are in the field: Louis Oosthuizen (7), Matt Kuchar (11), Kegan Bradley (14), Dustin Johnson (19), Charl Schwartzel (16), defending champ Jason Dufner (20), Jason Day (25), Martin Kaymer (34), Robert Garrigus (36), Scott Piercy (38) and D.A. Points (46).

Players of interest include Chinese 14-year-old Guan Tianlang, who was low amateur and youngest amateur making the cut at this year's Masters. Also, local boy Jordan Spieth, who tied for 16th at the 2010 Nelson while an amateur still in high school. In 2011, as a freshman at the University of Texas, he tied for 32nd.
