Abu Azaitar

Nearly sees final bell in rout
March 27, 2021
Azaitar lost to Marc-Andre Barriault via TKO (punches) at 4:56 of Round 3 at UFC 260 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It's a minor miracle Azaitar nearly made it to the final bell. Of course, he never would have come close if referee Jerin Valel was properly doing his job. Azaitar started off quickly, clearly getting the better of Barriault in a back-and-forth Round 1. It was all downhill from there. Azaitar quickly gassed out and found himself on the receiving end of countless unanswered shots from his opponent. Valel should have stopped the fight a couple minutes earlier before finally pulling the plug with a mere four seconds left. Azaitar hadn't fought since July 2018 prior to Saturday and looked the part of a guy who spent more than two and a half years on the sidelines.

Set to meet Marc-Andre Barriault
February 12, 2021
Azaitar (suspension) will take on Marc-Andre Barriault on March 27, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Azaitar was hit with a backdated seven-month suspension in early February after testing positive for a banned substance, but the suspension will expire before the end of the month. He'll enter his next fight on a 10-match undefeated streak, most recently beating Vitor Miranda in his UFC debut by unanimous decision back in July of 2018. Barriault hasn't had nearly the same success, failing to win any of his four UFC fights to date, with his lone victory changing to a no-contest after he tested positive for ostarine.
Hit with backdated suspension
February 1, 2021
Azaitar was hit with a seven-month suspension Monday after testing positive for a banned substance, Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.ca reports.
While the ban lasts for seven months, Azaitar has already served the majority of it, as it was backdated to the date of his initial positive test for tamoxifen back in late August. He reportedly took the medication at the direction of a doctor but was suspended anyway for failing to provide a Therapeutic Use Exemption. The suspension presumably explains why he was forced to withdraw from a scheduled matchup against Joaquin Buckley in October for undisclosed reasons. He'll be eligible to get back in the Octagon by the end of the month.
Out of fight
September 26, 2020
Azaitar will not fight Joaquin Buckley at the UFC event October 10, Jon Anick of ESPN reports.
It's not clear why Azaitar was unable to fight, but Impa Kasanganay will fight Buckley now. Azaitar was coming off a unanimous decision win over Vitor Miranda in July.
Booked for Oct. 10
August 22, 2020
Azaitar will square off against Joaquin Buckley in a middleweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for Oct. 10, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Azaitar is coming off a victory via unanimous decision over Vitor Miranda at UFC Fight Night 134. His overall MMA record now sits at 14-1-1. His opponent, Buckley, is coming off a loss to Kevin Holland via a Round 3 TKO. It was his debut fight.
Secures tough unanimous decision win in Hamburg
July 22, 2018
Azaitar defeated Vitor Miranda via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night 134 on Sunday in Hamburg, Germany.
Azaitar showed himself to be the quicker, more powerful fighter from the outset but Miranda changed things up by securing takedowns and putting the debutante in some compromising positions. Azaitar seemed unfazed, however, timing his sweeps perfectly and securing top position while doing enough work with his striking to take home the victory. While he didn't show everything he had in this fight, Azaitar is tremendously quick and powerful, which could make him someone to watch for at middleweight going forward. He improves to 14-1-1 with one no-contest as a result of the victory.
