Tiuliulin planned to stand in on short notice after Pickett's previous opponent, Abdul Razak Alhassan, withdrew, but the fight will no longer take place as scheduled. However, the bout is likely to be rescheduled for UFC 279 on Sept. 10, per Nolan King of USA Today.
Steps in on short notice
June 27, 2022
Tiuliulin will step in on short notice to face Jamie Pickett in a middleweight matchup at UFC Vegas 58 on July 9, Marcel Dorff of reports.
Tiuliulin's UFC debut back in March didn't go his way, as he was taken down twice by Aliaskhab Khizriev before getting submitted in the second round. He'll get a chance to quickly bounce back against Pickett, as he'll "save" this fight on short notice following the withdrawal of Abdul Razak Alhassan (undisclosed). Tiuliulin will give up an inch in height and three inches in reach to his opponent, who is also looking to bounce back from a relatively recent defeat.
Taps out in UFC debut
March 26, 2022
Tiuliulin lost to Aliaskhab Khizriev via technical submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:58 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
Tiuliulin's UFC debut did not go well, but it was to be expected considering he stepped in on just a couple weeks' notice and entered as a +650 underdog, by far the largest on the entire card. Tiuliulin hung around to some extent in the stand-up, but he was overwhelmed by the grappling game of Khizriev. He allowed his opponent to land two takedown attempts, in addition to making an error early in Round 2 in which he left his neck exposed. Tiuliulin ended up going to sleep instead of tapping out. Although little should be expected from Tiuliulin moving forward, he will undoubtedly get another opportunity with the UFC due to his willingness to step in here.
