Won't require surgery
March 2, 2022
Dariush (lower leg) won't require surgery to repair his fractured fibula and has a recovery timeline of 6-to-8 weeks, Brett Okamoto of reports.
Dariush has consulted with multiple doctors and will forgo surgery to allow the bone to heal on its own. The injury forced him to withdraw from his matchup with Islam Makhachev on Feb. 26, but UFC president Dana White now plans to re-book that matchup later this year. Dariush isn't expected to be cleared for full training until at least mid-April, and he could return to the Octagon in June or July if he can avoid any hiccups in his recovery and rehab.
Suffers fractured fibula
February 17, 2022
Updating a previous report, Dariush has withdrawn from next week's scheduled maiin event due to a broken fibula bone, Brett Okamoto of ESPN reports.
What was initially reported as an ankle injury turned out to be significantly more serious, plus it carries the risk of surgery, so Dariush could be sidelined for quite a long time. It's a tough break for the lightweight fighter, who was just on the verge of title contention. In the meantime, Makhachev will face late-notice replacement Bobby Green in the main event of next week's card.
Withdraws due to ankle injury
February 16, 2022
Dariush has an ankle injury and withdrew from his scheduled lightweight matchup with Islam Makhachev at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 26, MMA reporter Ariel Helwani reports.
The withdrawal will leave Makhachev without an opponent less than two weeks before the main event, and it's unclear if he'll be removed from the card or face a new opponent. Dariush beat Tony Ferguson in May to extend his winning streak to seven fights, and the Feb. 26 matchup would have been a huge opportunity, as Makhachev is 10-1 in the UFC with nine straight victories.
Will take on Makhachev
November 27, 2021
Dariush will fight against Islam Makhachev in a lightweight bout on Feb. 26, according to Brett Okamoto of
Dariush is coming off a huge victory against Tony Ferguson earlier this year and is set to take on what's probably one of the biggest fights of his career when facing an elite opponent in Makhachev. Dariush will put his seven-fight winning streak on the line in this matchup.
Cruises past Tony Ferguson
May 15, 2021
Dariush defeated Tony Ferguson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC 262 on Saturday in Houston.
It's the biggest victory of Dariush's professional career, and it came in resounding fashion. There's no doubt a victory over Ferguson these days means far, far less than even 12 months ago, but Dariush blew past him without issue. He easily forced Tony to the mat on multiple occasions and kept him pinned there for the near entirety of the bout. Beneil has had problems in the past with both starting slowly and being a bit sleepy at times inside the Octagon, but he appears to have corrected both of those issues. He's always been extremely technical and had underrated stopping power in his hands. He's extremely heavy and difficult to dislodge if he ends up in top position, and he has eight career wins via submission. In summary, Dariush is a top-tier lightweight and is seemingly no more than one additional victory away from a shot at UFC gold.
