Jack Della Maddalena

Second straight split decision win
September 16, 2023
Della Maddalena defeated Kevin Holland via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at Noche UFC on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It's a second straight spilt decision win for Della Maddalena, albeit it the second in a row that he probably deserved to win. Jack's takedown defense was an unmitigated disaster against newcomer Bassil Hafez this past July, so he had to be beyond thrilled that Holland was willing to engage him in a 15-minute kickboxing match. Della Maddalena struggled to consistently get inside against his taller, longer opponent, but when he did, Jack consistently landed the harder blows. In many ways, this fight was a case of optics. The damaging shots that Della Maddalena connected with meant more than the volume route Holland employed. While this is an excellent win from JDM, it's still fair to wonder how he will look the next time he is tasked with going up against a wrestling-heavy opponent.

Taking on Kevin Holland
August 18, 2023
Della Maddalena agreed to face Kevin Holland in a welterweight bout at Noche UFC on Sept. 16 in Las Vegas, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
The pair will join the card after the welterweight fight between Kelvin Gastelum (undisclosed) and Shavkat Rakhmonov was canned. Holland is coming off a dominant victory over Michael Chiesa in July and has won two straight bouts. Della Maddalena remains undefeated since coming up through Dana White's Contender Series in 2021 and last beat Bassil Hafez in July, though it wasn't an easy victory.
Barely survives Bassil Hafez
July 15, 2023
Della Maddalena defeated Bassil Hafez via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC on ESPN 49 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Della Maddalena has been hanging around Vegas the past couple weeks, willing to fight anyone who would step into the Octagon with him at 170 pounds following the potential lifesaving withdrawal of Josiah Harrell a week ago. Hafez stepped up here, and JDM nearly paid for it. Entering as a -650 favorite, Jack dropped the first round after spending more than three minutes on his back. He allowed three takedowns in Round 1 and stuffed all 15 of Hafex's attempts the rest of the way, which is a good thing because if even one more of those tries landed, JDM may have been looking at his first loss since May 2016. Ultimately, however, Jack was able to do enough damage on the feet over the course of the final ten minutes -- when Hafez's energy dropped -- to convince two of the three judges he deserved the win. JDM needs to clean up his takedown defense moving forward, as constantly attempting guillotines in place of actual defense and then ending up on his back just isn't going to cut it. Any opponent that saw this fight is understandably going to try to get him to the mat. On the bright side, though, he'll take home an extra $50,000 after this bout was given Fight of the Night honors.
Set to take on Bassil Hafez
July 10, 2023
Della Maddalena will fight Bassil Hafez in a welterweight fight at UFC Vegas 77 on July 15, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
After previously having two opponents drop out of his UFC 290 bout on July 8, Della Maddalena will now fight one weekend later. Della Maddalena is 4-0 in his UFC career, taking on Hafez, who is making his UFC debut.
Fight called off
July 7, 2023
Della Maddalena will no longer fight Josiah Harrell at UFC 290 on July 8, MMA reporter Ariel Helwani reports.
After Harrell was forced out of the fight due to a medial issue, Saturday's fight has officially been called off. Della Maddalena has now had two consecutive fighters drop out prior to his July 8 fight date. Currently, a date has not been set for Della Maddalena to return to the Octagon.
New opponent scheduled
July 2, 2023
Della Maddalena will fight Josiah Harrell in a welterweight bout at UFC 290 on July 8, according to Damon Martin of MMAFighting.com.
Della Maddalena was initially scheduled to fight Sean Brady at UFC 290 before the latter withdrew because of an undisclosed injury. Willing to fight anyone from 170-to-185 pounds to remain on the pay-per-view card, the UFC found a newcomer for him to fight. Harrell is undefeated across his seven pro bouts, each ending via finish.
