Losing streak hits four
WelterweightUFC
May 20, 2023
Sato lost to Themba Gorimbo via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Sato was knocked out by Bryan Battle in 44 seconds in his most recent bout last August, so he performed better in this one by simply seeing the final bell. Other than that, it was another dreadful effort from the soon-to-be 33-year-old. Sato allowed Gorimbo to rack up 11:15 worth of control time, in addition to being knocked down in the second frame. The loser of four in a row dating back to November 2020, Sato would appear to have a very low chance of receiving another opportunity with the company.

Taking on Gorimbo
WelterweightUFC
April 21, 2023
Sato agreed to face Themba Gorimbo in a welterweight bout at UFC's May 20 event, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Sato has lost his past three bouts and was KO'd in 44 seconds by Bryan Battle in August, so he's likely close to getting cut. Gorimbo made his UFC debut in February and was tapped out by AJ Fletcher.
Finished in 44 seconds in Vegas
WelterweightUFC
August 6, 2022
Sato lost to Bryan Battle via KO (head kick) at 0:44 of Round 1 at UFC on ESPN 40 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Sato's late-notice lopsided unanimous decision loss to Gunnar Nelson this past March was understandable, but he had a full training camp ahead of this fight and still managed to last just 44 seconds. Sato had no history of durability issues coming into the evening, with just one knockout defeat on his resume, but a perfectly placed head kick from Battle shut his lights out on the spot. Sato made his UFC debut in April 2019 with a victory over Ben Saunders, but he's lost four or five since including his last three in a row. This performance might be difficult for Sato to overcome considering how emphatic the defeat was.
Hoping to bounce back in August
WelterweightUFC
June 13, 2022
Sato will take on Bryan Battle in a welterweight bout at the UFC event Aug. 7, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sato is coming off a poor showing against Gunnar Nelson in March. In Sato's defense, he was a late add as a replacement for Claudio Silva. Prior to that Sato lost by submission to Miguel Baeza and beak Jason Witt by TKO. Battle will be making his debut at 170-pounds in August after previously fighting middleweight.
Not competitive in London
WelterweightUFC
March 19, 2022
Sato lost to Gunnar Nelson via unanimous decision (26-30, 26-30, 26-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in London.
ANALYSIS
Sato found himself in a real tough spot here stepping in against Nelson on just a couple weeks' notice, and he did a nice job just to see the final bell. He was competitive whenever the two men engaged in striking exchanges before being predictably overwhelmed whenever Nelson got him to the mat. Sato is known for his power, while Gunnar is one of the most decorated mat specialists in the sport today, so credit to Sato for simply avoiding the submission. The 31-year-old has lost three of four dating back to September 2019, but his willingness to "save" this fight on short notice will certainly earn him some brownie points in the eyes of UFC executives.
Stepping in against Gunnar Nelson
WelterweightUFC
March 7, 2022
Sato (eye) will take on Gunnar Nelson in London on March 19, Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sato steps in to replace Claudio Silva, who withdrew Friday due to a knee injury. Sato himself is coming off an injury, as he was handed a six-month medical suspension due to a left orbital fracture following his second-round submission loss to Miguel Baeza in November. He's evidently been cleared to return before that period elapsed. Sato will be looking to improve to 3-2 as a UFC fighter, while Nelson will be looking to improve to 9-5.
