Signs minor-league deal with Tampa
OFTampa Bay Rays  AAA
August 17, 2025
Hummel and the Rays agreed on a minor-league contract Sunday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis
Hummel elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Astros earlier this week, but he has quickly found another opportunity with Tampa Bay. The outfielder will likely report to Triple-A Durham, and it's possible that he could earn a promotion to the major-league roster later this year. Hummel has played in 37 games between the Orioles and Astros this year, producing a disappointing .170 average with three home runs, seven RBI, 10 runs scored and a stolen base over 88 at-bats.

This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Hummel was dealt to Seattle from Arizona in the deal for Kyle Lewis last winter, and he was able to break camp with the Mariners and even saw some time in the lineup to begin 2023. He went just 2-for-23 in his chances, however, and he didn't see another at-bat with the M's after April 18. The left-handed hitter was effective in Tacoma with an .835 OPS and 27 steals over 455 plate appearances, and he's slashed .288/.420/.492 in his 225 games at the Triple-A level. Hummel is a patient hitter who doesn't possess a ton of swing-and-miss, but he also doesn't have the power potential that you typically see in a viable corner-outfield option. He does have the ability to catch, and that versatility and approach gives him a chance to make the Seattle roster out of the Cactus League. It just won't likely make him worthy of a fantasy roster anytime soon, if ever.
After crushing Triple-A for two seasons, Hummel got his first chance in the majors in his age-27 season. His excellent plate discipline along with the chance to gain catcher eligibility made him an early-season free agent and waiver target. As is often the case when a hitter advanced for the minor league level excels, Hummer was unable to translate his success on the farm to the majors. A 32% strikeout rate in concert with weak contact yielded a .581 OPS. The Mariners acquired Hummel from Arizona in the offseason, so they must feel he can capture some of his minor league prowess. He walked at an 11.4% clip and swiped four bags in five tries. Plus, Hummel caught 18 games, so picking up a reserve who can catch helps in-game managing, not to mention he may have or gain catcher eligibility in some fantasy leagues. There is enough to track Hummel, but not sufficient reason to offer him a seat at the fantasy table.

Getting time at catcher
OFArizona Diamondbacks  AAA
August 15, 2022
Hummel made his first two big-league starts at catcher over the weekend in Colorado.
Analysis
Hummel spent much of his college and early minor-league career as a catcher but has rarely appeared behind the plate over the last three seasons. When backup catcher Jose Herrera was optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday, it seemed likely that Daulton Varsho would take over his role but it appears another versatile outfielder, Hummel, has taken on the backup catching duties. Hummel has a subpar .174/.278/.297 line in 53 games for Arizona and a healthy .310/.423/.527 line in 33 contests in Triple-A. The 27-year-old will likely split his time between catcher and the corner outfield spots for the Diamondbacks.
