Melton, in his first season with the Grizzlies, averaged a career-high 7.6 points across 19.5 minutes per game in 60 appearances. He also averaged a career-high 3.7 rebounds, plus 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals. In terms of shooting, the point guard set career marks in field-goal percentage (40.1) and free-throw percentage (76.9). In the USC product's team debut, Oct. 23 against the Heat, he posted two assists and one steal in three minutes. He had his first double-digit scoring outing of the season Nov. 9 against the Mavericks, recording 11 points. On Dec. 1 against the Timberwolves, Melton dished out a season-high eight assists. Just one day later against the Pacers, he grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. On Feb. 20, Melton scored a career-high 24 points (5-10 FG, 4-5 3Pt, 10-10 FT) in what was his best overall game of the season. That performance also included six rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Melton swiped his career-high six steals during the NBA restart in the Orlando bubble Aug. 9 against the Raptors.
2018
Melton spent his first season in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns, appearing in 50 games. He started 31 contests, playing nearly 20 minutes a night. Melton parlayed his time on the court into averages of 5.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He also finished sixth on the squad in assists. Melton doled out a career-high 10 dimes in a win over Denver on Jan. 12. And he'd go on to post 12 outings with at least five assists. Melton scored in double-digits on eight occasions as a rookie. His best output in terms of points came on Dec. 4 against Sacramento, when he poured in 21 points versus the Kings. Melton shot 39.1 percent from the field for the season, including over 30 percent from three-point range. He also showed quick hands on the defensive end, swiping 1.4 balls per contest. Melton would finish fourth on the team in steals and registered four thefts in three different games.
