College Football Fantasy Five: Week of April 19

College Football Fantasy Five: Week of April 19

This article is part of our College Football Fantasy Five series.

Even though there are no official college football games being played, it doesn't mean that we can't start preparing for the 2021 fantasy college football season. I've scrubbed the current headlines and here's a countdown of the top five stories with fantasy implications.

5.) No. 1 WR Erik Ezukanma Breaks Arm in Spring Practice with Texas Tech

Ezukanma broke his arm in practice this past week and will likely be out until the team starts up in September. This is big news as the Red Raiders' top receiver was returning from a 2020 season where he converted 46 of 79 targets for 748 yards and six touchdowns in 10 games. With a new capable quarterback in Tyler Shough (transfer from Oregon), we'll see more of Dalton Rigdon, Trey Cleveland and McLane Mannix while Ezukanma works his way back. If Ezukanma takes more time to heal than anticipated, I'm not sure I would be ready to jump on one of these other receivers at this point. It's worth noting that RB SaRodorick Thompson just had shoulder surgery, so Texas Tech will be without perhaps their two best playmakers for the rest of the off-season.

4.) Despite WR Injury Problems, Stock is Up for QB JT Daniels at Georgia

The throw from Daniels to Adonai Mitchell couldn't have been prettier in Georgia's spring game this past weekend. Although I've been all over the news of injuries to George Pickens and Jermaine Burton, I just have a feeling that Georgia's offense is going to explode in the 2021 season. Maybe I'm spending too much time on figuring out who the primary receivers will be and should be turning my attention to Daniels who could have a breakout year. I typically don't put too much stock in statistics from the spring game, but he did go 28 of 41 for 324 yards and three touchdowns. It appears Georgia is going to be much more dynamic offensively than they've been in the past.

3.) No News on the Quarterback Battle at Ohio State

According to the Associated Press, the Ohio State QB battle will last into the fall. C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller, and Kyle McCord all have a chance to replace Justin Fields, and not one of them has thrown an official college football pass. In the scrimmage for the Buckeyes, Stroud and McCord each threw two touchdowns passes. Whoever wins this job will be highly sought after as Ohio State expects to sport one of the best offenses in the nation with impressive playmakers in RB Master Teague, WR Garrett Wilson, and WR Chris Olave.

2.) Is Tank Bigsby the Top Returning RB in College Football? Auburn

I won't go as far as to say Bigsby is the top returning RB in college football because Iowa State's Breece Hall has proven himself and returns for a far better team in 2021. However, I could get on board with saying Bigsby could be the best value pick in 2021 fantasy drafts. In the early spring industry mock draft, Bigsby was the seventh RB drafted at 2.3 in a 13-person draft, which I feel could be too low based on the talent he showed during his true freshman season.

1.) The Hype Has Arrived for QB Bryce Young at Alabama

Young won MVP honors at the Alabama spring game while completing 25 of 44 passes for 333 yards and a touchdown. He also dazzled with some nifty pocket moves to open up for some throws downfield. The initial preview of his arm has the Crimson Tide fan base (all 47,218 fans in attendance) excited about what he can do in the upcoming year. I previously looked at the dual-threat quarterback in my 2021 QB Newcomers article. Considering Young is the odds-on favorite to win the starting job for Alabama in 2021, he should really move up draft boards come the fall.
