Okwara racked up just one sack over four games in 2021 before going down for the year with a torn Achilles. While he is not expected to be back in the pass-rush rotation until midseason, Okwara should immensely benefit from returning to his natural spot at defensive end after playing at outside linebacker in Detroit's old 3-4 defensive scheme.
Getting rewarded with a three-year, $13 million deal in free agency after posting 10 sacks in 2020, Okwara is set to move to outside linebacker in Detroit's new 3-4 alignment. How this might impact his output remains to be seen, but it's not out of the question that Okwara could see less snaps as a pure pass-rusher.
A breakout 2018 campaign in which Okwara logged 7.5 sacks was followed up by a disappointing total of 1.5 in 2019. Having also never reached 40 tackles in a year through four seasons, Okwara is a hard sell as an IDP prospect despite his starting role, especially after the Lions drafted no other than Okwara's brother -- 2020 third-rounder Julian Okwara out of Notre Dame -- to compete for playing time.
Okwara broke out in 2018 with a team-leading 7.5 sacks for Detroit. However, the team then went out and spent big money on defensive end Trey Flowers in free agency to join a roster that already includes 2018 fourth-round steal Da'Shawn Hand. Mike Daniels was then brought on before training camp. While Okwara has garnered plenty of action with the first-team defense in training camp and the preseason while Hand nurses an arm injury, it's possible Okwara could revert to a rotational role behind Hand when both are fully healthy.
Reserve defensive end, competing for a roster spot.
