Rypien signed with Cincinnati's practice squad Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Rypien spent training camp with the Vikings, but he'll head to greener pastures in an organization with a less crowded quarterback depth chart. He'll be the next man up should anything happen to Joe Burrow or backup Jake Browning.

2021
Rypien is likely to enter the season as the Bears' No. 3 quarterback. The veteran is entering his fifth year in the league, a time in which the former Boise State product has thrown a total of 168 passes and posted a 4:11 TD:INT. His most extensive action came when he played with the Broncos in 2022, completing 60.2 percent of his passes while tossing two touchdowns and four interceptions. He's unlikely to be more than a depth option for the Bears as Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent are above him on the QB depth chart.
After three uneventful seasons in Denver, the fourth-year pro will enter a quarterback room headed by veteran Matthew Stafford, who has missed significant time with injury in two out of the past four seasons. Rypien will have to battle rookie Stetson Bennett for the outright backup job, and his pedestrian numbers from last season (483 yards and a 2:4 TD:INT ratio in four games) will make it a toss-up on who claims the No. 2 quarterback role.
After playing just three snaps in the 2021 season as the No. 3 quarterback behind Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock, Rypien enters the 2022 season facing a similar situation. The newly acquired Russell Wilson will take over the reins, as Rypien will compete for the primary backup role with veteran Josh Johnson after he was signed to a one-year deal in March. It appears, for the time being, that Johnson is the favorite for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.
Entering the 2021 season, Rypien would appear to have the edge to lock up the QB3 spot in Denver. Assuming offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur carries three quarterbacks on the final roster as he usually does, Rypien's experience in Denver's system is an added bonus in the quarterback room. Nonetheless, playing time will be hard to come by in 2021 for the veteran backup, as he is behind incumbent starter Drew Lock and newcomer Teddy Bridgewater on the team's depth chart.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Strong initial bid for roster spot
QBChicago Bears
August 2, 2024
Rypien, who's battling Tyson Bagent for the Bears' No. 2 quarterback job behind first overall pick Caleb Williams, made a strong first impression during Chicago's Hall of Fame Game win over the Texans on Thursday, ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Rypien signed with the Bears at the start of free agency after spending last season with the Rams, but until Thursday night, he was thought to be a clear No. 3 behind Bagent, who impressed during multiple spot starts as a rookie in 2023. The perception may have shifted at least slightly with Rypien's near-perfect performance, one that saw him in clear command of his new team's offense on his way to tossing a trio of touchdown passes. Bagent was only in on Chicago's first possession Thursday, but he'll presumably have appreciably more opportunities to showcase his skills in the job battle over the final three exhibitions.
