Hutchinson was on his way to a secondary breakout in 2024, as he had already piled up 7.5 sacks and 17 quarterback hits in just five games. Disaster struck in Week 6 against Dallas, however, as Hutchinson suffered a catastrophic leg injury that ended his season. All of the reports regarding his recovery have been positive, and he told reporters in late May that he has been fully cleared for the 2025 season. While that suggests health and playing time won't be a concern, it's still likely best to evaluate his potential in the upcoming campaign cautiously. Double-digit sacks and a minimum of 40 tackles is realistic, but a potential Defensive Player of the Year type season may have to wait until 2026. Agrees to extension with Lions
Hutchinson and Detroit agreed to terms Wednesday on a four-year, $180 million contract extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
				ANALYSIS
Hutchinson's new deal includes $141 million guaranteed and a $46 million average yearly salary, just barely trailing the $46.5 million average of current highest-paid pass rusher Micah Parsons, per Schefter. Through seven regular-season appearances thus far in 2025, Hutchinson has tallied 16 tackles (11 solo), including 6.0 sacks. He's also logged one pass defensed, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery, demonstrating high-end playmaking ability despite the catastrophic leg injury that ended his 2024 campaign early. Hutchinson will look to add to his totals Sunday, at home versus the division-rival Vikings.

This section compares his draft workout metrics with players at the same position. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that metric and it would be considered average.

Even relative to the expectations of being the No. 2 overall pick, Hutchinson has been plenty productive through his first two seasons. He's combined to produce 21 sacks and 23 tackles for loss in 34 games. While his surface stats were nearly identical from 2022 to 2023, both his improved playmaking and peripheral stats make clear that we should expect more from Hutchinson. Most notably, he doubled his quarterback hits (15 to 33), increased his tackles for loss from nine to 14 and also forced three fumbles from his rookie to sophomore campaigns. His ability to get to the quarterback is particularly positive and illustrates his ability to produce at the levels of elite pass rushers around the league, as only T.J. Watt (36) and Nick Bosa (35) logged more quarterback hits than Hutchinson (33). The final piece to the puzzle is the rest of the defensive line supporting him, as Alim McNeil and new addition DJ Reader will occupy offensive lineman and keep double teams away from Hutchinson. Year three has all the makings of a breakout.

    Engaged in contract talks
General manager Brad Holmes relayed during Thursday's press conference that the Lions and Hutchinson have opened talks about a new contract, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
				ANALYSIS
The desire to reach a contract extension has been accelerated by the number of pass rushers who have agreed to new deals this year, most recently Micah Parsons and his four-year, $188 million contract with the Packers after being acquired from the Cowboys on Thursday. Birkett relays that the Lions have prioritized signing cornerstone players like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Taylor Decker to long-term extensions, and Hutchinson is certainly someone that Detroit would like to keep around for a long time. Hutchinson was on his way to earning Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2024 before breaking his left tibia and fibula against the Cowboys in Week 6, but he is fully healthy heading into the 2025 campaign.
