Colt McCoy

Colt McCoy

36-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
Arizona Cardinals
2023 Fantasy Outlook
McCoy started three games last season for the Cardinals and came off the bench in another after Kyler Murray tore his ACL less than two minutes into the Week 14 game. The Cardinals won just one of those four games while McCoy threw for one TD and three interceptions. His average target depth was only 6.1 yards, and he completed just three of 10 attempts of 20-plus yards. McCoy, though, could get another shot Week 1 if Murray isn't ready after undergoing surgery in early January. While Murray reportedly has made steady progress, returning to play a mere nine months after a significant knee injury is challenging. The Cardinals drafted QB Clayton Tune in the fifth round and still have David Blough and Jeff Driskel on the roster, but none is likely to surpass McCoy. The Cardinals have decent targets in WRs Marquise Brown and Rondale Moore and TEs Zach Ertz and Trey McBride, but the offensive line is an annual issue and McCoy won't add many rushing stats if he starts a few games early in the season. ANALYSIS
McCoy injured his elbow last season and needed offseason surgery. He's been getting the bulk of the first-team reps this spring with Kyler Murray still recovering from his torn ACL. There's a good chance McCoy opens the year as Arizona's starter, as the prospect of Murray being available Week 1 is iffy.

In his first season backing up Kyler Murray last year, McCoy was called upon for three spot starts when the Cardinals' franchise quarterback missed time with a sprained ankle, a span in which the 12-year pro completed 68 of 90 passes (75.6 percent) for 684 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. McCoy's 201 snaps on offense were his most since 2014, but assuming Murray avoids the injury bug this fall, the former is unlikely to see much more than kneel downs at the end of contests. Before that potentially happens, though, a calf injury will keep him on IR for at least the first four contests, giving backup duties to Trace McSorley.
McCoy earned the majority of his 30 career starts (21, to be precise) for the Browns in his first two pro seasons, but the 2010 third-round pick has gotten the nod in four other campaigns between Washington and the Giants. Last year, he started for an injured Daniel Jones twice, completing 60.3 percent of his passes for 326 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Now in Arizona, McCoy will back up another young signal-caller in Kyler Murray.
McCoy is a typical journeyman backup who poses no threat to starter Daniel Jones and is only around in the event Jones has to miss a couple games with an injury. McCoy is 33 and hasn't attempted more than 130 passes in a season since 2011.
McCoy briefly got a shot to start last year after Alex Smith suffered a broken leg in November, only to suffer a season-ending leg fracture of his own. Head coach Jay Gruden said McCoy would be back to compete for the starting job in 2019, but Washington then traded for Case Keenum and drafted Dwayne Haskins in the first round. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old McCoy needed follow-up surgeries in the offseason, then deal with setbacks during training camp. He never got a real chance to compete for the starting job.
McCoy is back for another season as Washington's backup quarterback, now slotting in behind Alex Smith instead of Kirk Cousins. McCoy hasn't started a game since 2015, but his familiarity with coach Jay Gruden's scheme could lead to serviceable production if the 31-year-old has to replace Smith at some point in the season.
McCoy signed a three-year extension with the Redskins in 2016, solidifying himself as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart for the next handful of seasons. Last season marked the first time in the 30-year-old's career in which he did not take a snap during the regular season. The Redskins will hope for the same result in 2017 as Kirk Cousins heads into his third season as starter under center after not missing a contest in either of the past two years. Bearing that in mind, McCoy should garner little to any fantasy buzz as he prepares for another season on the sidelines.
Entering his third season with the Redskins, McCoy was the primary backup in 2015 and will fill the role again this year. He only had 11 pass attempts last season and will only see playing time in 2016 if starter Kirk Cousins suffers an injury. Though Washington drafted former Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld in the sixth round this year, he shouldn't be a threat to the 29-year-old McCoy's second-string status this season.
McCoy started last year as the third string quarterback but injuries and ineffective play from Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins opened the door. The former Texas signal caller saw significant playing time in five games last season, posting 1,057 passing yards, four passing touchdowns and three interceptions in his most action since 2011. McCoy demonstrated better pocket presence than his teammates and showed signs of a game manager at times, but his season ended in Week 14 due to a neck injury. He enters 2015 as a backup, likely as the team’s second-string quarterback, but he could drop lower depending on preseason performance. His chances of seeing game action are directly tied to Griffin’s health and ability to run the offense.
Third string quarterback.
McCoy is expected to back up Colin Kaepernick in 2013 and is unlikely to see the field, barring an injury to Kaepernick.
Outside of two shocking victories over the Patriots and Saints in his rookie season, McCoy's first two years have been tough sledding. He's thrown for 4,309 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions in 21 games with a 74.5 rating. Heading into the 2012 season the Browns organization has vowed to give McCoy a chance to compete for the starting job with rookie first-round selection Brandon Weeden, but he doesn't figure to win that battle, or last long if he gets the first crack. There is a possibility he ends up in another city by opening day, but it would likely be in a backup roll.
While he was promising as a rookie, the short term doesn’t look to be especially favorable to McCoy’s fantasy prospects. The Browns declined to add Alabama wideout Julio Jones in the draft, opting for Atlanta’s trade offer instead, leaving McCoy again with what figures to be one of the worst wideout lineups in the league. To leave McCoy less vulnerable from his lack of targets, look for Cleveland to run Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty often. If McCoy doesn’t have his opportunities limited by a run-heavy offense, his accuracy as a passer and ability to run make him worth monitoring.
McCoy was taken in the third round of this year's draft and is seen as a project for team president Mike Holmgren (see Joe Montana, Steve Young, Brett Favre and Matt Hasselbeck). If he sees playing time this season, it will likely be after injuries plague Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace as McCoy is seen as a commodity to be groomed before being thrown into the fire. It will be fun to track his progress down the road, but this year he will spend the bulk of his time on the sidelines watching and waiting for his opportunities to come down the road.
