2024 Fantasy Outlook
Now back in Dallas after one year in exile, Elliott returns for his age-29 season to find that his former successor has left behind the entire workload he and Elliott once fought for. The old Elliott vs. Tony Pollard debate has no clear winner, but Pollard is in Tennessee now anyway, leaving only the likes of Rico Dowdle, Royce Freeman and Deuce Vaughn for Elliott to hold off. Even at two years older than the last time around, Elliott should prove superior to the Cowboys' other running backs, especially when it comes to blocking and pass catching . Vaughn barely played after being drafted in the sixth round last year; Dowdle is a 2020 UDFA who had just seven career carries before last season; Freeman has been nothing more than a passing-down specialist and special teams player since 2019. Elliott thus finds himself in good position for a starting job on a team that averaged a league-high 29.9 points per game last season, though the Cowboys could run into some trouble up front while counting on rookies to replace LT Tyron Smith (Jets) and C Tyler Biadasz (Commanders). Dehydration cited for LP
Elliott was limited at Thursday's practice due to dehydration, Joe Hoyt of AllDLLS.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Elliott was one of two Cowboys (also, WR Ryan Flournoy) tacked on to the injury report Thursday for such a reason. Typically, dehydration is a short-term concern, but his listing on Friday's report bears watching to see if he may go into the weekend with a designation for Sunday's game at Pittsburgh. In his return to Dallas this season, Elliott has found the going tough, averaging 7.5 touches for 29.3 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring one TD on the ground through four contests.

Elliott is 28, but his "football age" might be closer to 30 given the mammoth workloads he has shouldered since his 2014 collegiate season. Elliott was a workhorse of rare quality at his peak, providing both volume and efficiency while totaling 2,803 touches in 131 games since 2014 (21.4 touches per game). Even a 228-pound back with outstanding ability to weave around would-be tacklers is going to take a beating with a workload like that. This isn't to say Elliott is completely toast -- he can still play, and his decreased YPC the last two years was partially due to playing through knee sprains (PCL in 2021, MCL in 2022) and taking short-yardage carries and other runs up the middle, while teammate Tony Pollard largely skipped such tasks. The Cowboys released Elliott in March, and he signed with the Patriots in August. In New England, he'll serve as a complementary option behind lead back Rhamondre Stevenson. While that role will limit his touches, he still could get goal-line work.

Could face competition from Cook
Elliott could face additional competition for carries, as Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports that the Cowboys signed Dalvin Cook to their practice squad Wednesday,
ANALYSIS
The Cowboys kept three running backs when they trimmed their roster down to 53 players Tuesday: Elliott, Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn. Elliott and Dowdle both seem poised for significant roles on offense, but Cook could cut into both of their workloads and even has a chance to emerge as Dallas' leading backfield option down the line. Cook had just 214 rushing yards in 2023 over 15 regular-season games, but he notched at least 1,135 yards on the ground in each of the previous four seasons.
