This Week's Wells Fargo Championship

Quail Hollow Club's first PGA Tour event was played in 2003 when David Toms won with 10-under 278. Vijay Singh, Robert Gamez and Brent Geiberger shared second at 280. The sponsor was Wachovia Bank until Wells Fargo Bank put its name up after buying Wachovia.

It didn't take long for the spreading of the high-quality course to the pros. What they found was a classic course in superb condition that rewarded good play but quick to penalize poor play. The greens have been praised for being challenging but accessible and very well maintained. So, in the last two weeks, the eighth and 10th greens have been re-sodded just before tournament time. The 13th was also re-sodded, but that was done for aesthetic reasons. After this week all of the greens are to be completely renovated in preparation for the 2017 PGA Championship.

In 2010, Rory McIlroy was the last player to make the cut on the number and go on to win. His winning week had a low score of the day, 6-under 66, in the third round, and he went even deeper in round four with a course-record 10-under 62 that sealed his first PGA Tour win. Twenty-one players ranked second to 50th in the Official World Golf Rankings are in the field.

Quail Hollow, however, is no pushover. The demanding three finishing holes - par-4, par3, par-4 - dubbed "The Green Mile," have provided success and disaster with the 18th being the most difficult on the course. Last year the 18th had 38 birdies, 126 bogeys, 24 double bogeys and four triple bogeys. Beware!

Need: Ball-striking with emphasis on driving accuracy, proximity to hole, scrambling as important as putting, avoid three-putting on slick greens.
