Drops decision to Ricky Simon
BantamweightUFC
June 14, 2025
Smotherman lost to Ricky Simon via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Smotherman was truly awful in a unanimous decision defeat to Serhiy Sidey in early May. He accepted a quick turnaround here against Simon following the withdrawal of Charles Jourdain (undisclosed) and again struggled, although this time it came as a +350 underdog. It's quite clear at this point that Smotherman has no defensive grappling to speak of. He allowed three takedowns to Simon, good for 9:13 worth of control time. If he wasn't flat on his back, he was being pinned up along the fence. Smotherman has some pop in his hands, but he simply doesn't have the secondary skills to allow him to get to it. He looks nothing like the guy that defeated Jake Hadley via unanimous decision in his UFC debut last October.

Not competitive in Des Moines
BantamweightUFC
May 3, 2025
Smotherman lost to Serhiy Sidey via unanimous decision (27-30, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
ANALYSIS
Smotherman looked quite good in his UFC debut in October, a unanimous decision, late-notice win over Jake Hadley. He had a full camp under his belt for this matchup against Sidey and was awful. Smotherman was either unable or unwilling to engage his opponent with any regularity. He appeared hesitant to let his hands go and was constantly defending takedown attempts. He gave up five on a dozen tries, leading to 4:12 worth of control time for Sidey. The terrible effort comes on the heels of Smotherman spending an extended time in Mexico training with Diego Lopes and crew. None if it bodes well for the 27-year-old Texan moving forward.
Scheduled against Sidey
BantamweightUFC
February 6, 2025
Smotherman is scheduled to compete against fellow bantamweight Serhiy Sidey at UFC Fight Night 258 in Des Moines on May 3, per Nolan King of MMA Junkie.
ANALYSIS
Sidey is expected to be Smotherman's second UFC opponent. The latter's first was Jake Hadley, who suffered a clear-cut decision loss when both fought at UFC Vegas 99. Smotherman will want to avoid Sidey's 2024 results, which included a controversial win and a controversial loss.
Earns late-notice debut win
BantamweightUFC
October 20, 2024
Smotherman defeated Jake Hadley via unanimous decision (30-26, 29-27, 29-27) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
In for Brady Hiestand (undisclosed) on just days' notice, Smotherman went out and put forth an excellent, wholly-unexpected performance. He didn't overwhelm Hadley but appeared calm and comfortable at all times. He was clearly going to win a decision, but the scorecards become more lopsided after Hadley was docked a point for repeated eye pokes. While the result is great, it remains to be seen how much of this is sustainable. Our lone exposure to Smotherman prior to this bout was on Dana White's Contender Series in August 2023, and he was knocked out by Charalampos Grigoriou in exactly a minute that evening.
UFC debut scheduled
BantamweightUFC
October 16, 2024
Smotherman is scheduled to compete against Jake Hadley in a bantamweight fight at UFC Vegas 99 on Oct. 19, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Smotherman is a 27-year-old bantamweight the UFC signed so that he can fight Jake Hadley, who was expected to compete against Brady Hiestand (undisclosed) before the latter withdrew from their Oct. 19 bout. The replacement is 11-4 with six KO/TKOs and three straight wins as part of his latest streak. For his first UFC fight, Smotherman takes on a fighter 1-1 across 2024 thus far.
