Victim of awful judging decision
BantamweightUFC
January 20, 2024
Sidey lost to Ramon Taveras via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC 297 on Saturday in Toronto.
ANALYSIS
The calendar has moved to 2024, but MMA judges are still submitting woeful scorecards. Sidey was the victim in this instance. He clearly dropped Round 1 to Taveras. He also was clearly the better man over the course of the final ten minutes. Sidey was a bloody mess when all was said and done, so perhaps that influenced the judges, but it's pretty hard to believe he didn't get the call here. The lone good news for Sidey is that he's going to pick up 30 percent of Taveras' purse after the latter missed weight Friday morning. He deserved a better fate.

Gets contract with referee help

Sidey defeated Ramon Tavares via TKO (straight right) at 2:26 of Round 1 at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of five fighters to be awarded an official UFC contract.
ANALYSIS
There is no question that Sidey hurt his opponent late in Round 1, but the right hand he landed was his first significant strike of the fight, and his opponent showed no signs of being unable to defend himself. In fact, it was Sidey who took most of the damage throughout the bout, getting tagged with jab-cross combinations while occasionally firing a kick attempt. Sidey is a capable fighter who can do a bit of everything in the cage, but the only thing he accomplished in this fight was the one strike that the ref deemed big enough to close the show. One performance can be misleading, but Sidey will need to get offense going sooner if he's going to make an impact in a stacked division like bantamweight.
