Gets headline bout versus Vettori
MiddleweightUFC
April 20, 2023
Cannonier will fight Marvin Vettori at the UFC Vegas 75 on June 17, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Cannonier will enter the Octagon for the first time since December after he defeated Sean Strickland via split decision. The 37-year-old should have a reasonable case at a title rematch against Israel Adesanya should he come out on top against Vettori.

Closes 2022 with split decision win
MiddleweightUFC
December 17, 2022
Cannonier defeated Sean Strickland via split decision (49-46, 46-49, 49-46) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
To give you an idea how tight this fight was, all three judges didn't agree on even a single one of the five rounds. The craziest thing of all was that it was perfectly understandable. It was Cannonier that likely landed the biggest shots of the fight, but Strickland consistently worked behind his jab and landed combinations. While Sean only targeted Jared's head, Cannonier threw plenty of leg kicks and ripped the body when available. Jared gave off this impression of being the more aggressive fighter, but that was to be expected considering Strickland always sits back and attempts to counter his opposition. In a bout that could have legitimately gone either way, it was Cannonier that was delivered an early Christmas present. Jared is 6-2 in his past eight fights dating back to November 2018, with the lone setbacks coming against the best the division has to offer in Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker.
Set to headline UFC Vegas 66
MiddleweightUFC
September 13, 2022
Cannonier will take on Sean Strickland in a middleweight matchup in the main event of UFC Vegas 66 on Dec. 17, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Cannonier's matchup with Sean Strickland, that was cancelled after Strickland suffered a finger injury, will be rescheduled to headline UFC Vegas 66. The 38-year-old American was most recently defeated by Israel Adesanya in his first career title fight, but he will look to bounce back against Strickland. Cannonier currently boasts a record of 8-6 in the UFC.
Dropped from card
MiddleweightUFC
August 30, 2022
Cannonier won't fight at UFC's Oct. 15 event after Sean Strickland (finger) was forced to withdraw from the pair's middleweight bout, Mike Heck of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Strickland was dropped from the card due to a finger infection, and the promotion won't bring in a replacement fighter to fill out what was slated to be the main event. It's a tough break for Cannonier, who is looking to rebound from his July loss to Israel Adesanya for the UFC Middleweight Championship.
Headlines against Strickland in October
MiddleweightUFC
August 23, 2022
Cannonier will take on Sean Strickland in a middleweight matchup in the main event of the UFC event scheduled for Oct. 15.
ANALYSIS
Fresh off a loss to Israel Adesanya in his first career title shot, Cannonier will look to remain in the middleweight title picture by defeating a fighter in Strickland who was recently on the verge of a championship opportunity himself. Cannonier will give up a couple inches in height, but will own a slight reach advantage when the cage doors close. Strickland has the edge in striking volume, in addition to a bit more of a wrestling dynamic he could turn too if needed. Still, the power advantage arguably lies in the hands of Cannonier.
Can't steal middleweight gold
MiddleweightUFC
July 2, 2022
Cannonier failed in his quest for the UFC Middleweight Championship on Saturday, falling to Israel Adesanya via unanimous decision (46-49, 46-49, 45-50) at UFC 276 in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
This fight went as many expected. Cannonier was by no means overwhelmed in his first UFC championship fight, but the technical edge for Adesanya on the feet in what was essentially a 25-minute kickboxing match was too much for Jared to overcome. Cannonier was better in the second half of the fight than the first, but like virtually everyone Izzy had fought in the past, Jared struggled with the length of the champion. Cannonier is a big, strong guy with legitimate knockout power. A slow-paced, point-for-point, stand-up battle against arguably the best striker the sports has ever seen was not a recipe for success. Cannonier has found new life since a November 2018 move to middleweight, posting a 5-2 record during that span, but the two defeats came against Adesanya and former champion Robert Whittaker, signifying that Cannonier isn't quite on the same level as the best the UFC has to offer at 185 pounds.
