Takes decision from Kelvin Gastelum
Pyfer defeated Kelvin Gastelum via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 30-27) at UFC 316 on Saturday in Newark, New Jersey.
ANALYSIS
These two were scheduled to fight in late-March, at which point Pyfer was forced to withdraw the day of the event due to illness. They finally got it on here, and although Pyfer won convincingly, it was not the most impressive effort. The highlight of the night was a pair of Round 1 knockdown's secured by Pyfer. Yet, as is always the case, Gastelum's durability came through, and the bout continued. Joe's output and effectiveness dropped noticeably the final 10 minutes. He stopped throwing kicks and stopped stringing together combinations, instead looking for the knockout blow. Pyfer is 5-1 in six UFC bouts, including four wins via stoppage, so it's hard to say anything bad about his results to date, but he clearly has some holes in his game that he needs to clean up.

Out with illness

ANALYSIS
Pyfer was looking to make it two straight wins after disposing of Marc-Andre Barriault back in June, but he'll have to wait a little longer to try to build another winning streak. Rather than try to find a replacement fighter for Pyfer, the bout has been cancelled altogether.

Fighting Gastelum in March
Pyfer will fight Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Mexico on March 29, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
A win over Marc-Andre Barriault in June put Pyfer back in the win column after his three-fight win streak was snapped by Jack Hermansson in February. Now looking to build another streak, Pyfer will have five inches of height and 3.5 inches of reach working in his favor against Gastelum, who has lost six of his last nine fights.

Emphatic return to win column
Pyfer defeated Marc-Andre Barriault via KO (punch) at 1:25 of Round 1 at UFC 303 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Pyfer suffered his first UFC defeat his last time out, fading late in a five-round main event loss to a tough opponent in Jack Hermansson. He made sure no such thing would happen here. Pyfer, who is truly massive for middleweight, pinned Barriault up along the fence early on and turned his lights out in an instant. This finish would go on to earn him a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. Still just 27 years of age, Pyfer's inexperience against high-level competition is a concern, but his physical gifts are not in doubt. Don't give up on "Bodybagz" just yet.
