DraftKings MLB: Friday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Tanner Roark, WAS at ATL ($10,600): Roark proved more than capable of succeeding against the league-worst Braves offense when he limited them to one run over seven innings in a win last time out, and a change of venue shouldn't do much to slow his roll. He has been nearly lights out in holding opponents to one or fewer runs in five of his last seven appearances, and he is further enhancing his value with a career-high 7.28 K/9. With a top-10 Nationals lineup supporting him, Roark should be able to cruise to his fifth straight win.

Zack Greinke, ARI at SD ($8,800): This is an excellent opportunity to buy low on Greinke following a disastrous outing. San Diego's 20th-ranked offense is a far cry from the league-best Boston lineup that troubled the right-hander in his previous start, and facing the Padres should also help Greinke's strikeout rate since they whiff more than every single team except the Brewers. Arizona's ace has come up short of a quality start in consecutive games just twice this season, making him a safe bet to rebound in this convenient matchup.

CATCHER

Evan Gattis, HOU at BAL ($4,300): Gattis has managed a solid .360 wOBA against southpaws while smashing two more extra-base hits in 73 fewer at-bats facing them compared to right-handers this season. The power-hitting part-time catcher should be able to widen that gap even further against Wade Miley, who has given up 17 homers and 22 doubles in 97.1 innings against right-handed hitters en route to a .354 wOBA. There's rarely a more perfect time to deploy Gattis, especially given his favorable history against Miley (5-for-13 with two doubles).

FIRST BASE

Eric Hosmer, KC vs. MIN ($3,700): Twins starter Jose Berrios likely has a bright future, but the 22-year-old rookie still seems overwhelmed at the major league level. With a 9.32 ERA over 28 innings through seven starts, Berrios should be quite vulnerable against a Hosmer-led Royals offense. Kansas City's cleanup hitter comes in hot, with two homers in his last three games, and his .351 wOBA against right-handed pitching this year shows that he's always dangerous in this split. The first baseman should have no problems matching some of the bigger names at the position without leaving a hole in your fantasy wallet.

SECOND BASE

Dustin Pedroia, BOS vs. DET ($3,300): The righty-on-righty matchup looks off-putting at first glance, but Pedroia's .363 wOBA in those situations represents his more productive mark, while Tigers starter Michael Fulmer allows a .050 higher wOBA to that side. As a result, the Red Sox leadoff man is a strong under-the-radar discount option at just $3,300 since he'll be fresh following a day off and comes in riding a nine-game hitting streak.

THIRD BASE

Jake Lamb, ARI at SD ($4,900): Lamb's breakout season has come as a result of his improvement against righties, as the 25-year-old has turned last year's vanilla .322 wOBA in that split into an outstanding .400. Facing one that has walked more batters (24) than he has struck out (21) this season in San Diego's Jarred Cosart should only help to continue this excellent campaign. Batting in his usual cleanup spot for the Diamondbacks will likely provide the third baseman plenty of chances to drive in runs against this subpar starter.

SHORTSTOP

Alcides Escobar, KC vs. MIN ($3,700): Escobar actually hits significantly better against righties and comes in hot after managing four multi-hit efforts in his last seven games. Playing as many Royals bats as possible should pay dividends against rookie Jose Berrios, whose 9.32 ERA through seven starts is due to a staggering .505 wOBA allowed to right-handed bats. Runs should come in no short supply for Kansas City, and their shortstop's strong recent play makes him likely to contribute in a big way to the team's efforts.

OUTFIELD

J.D. Martinez, DET vs. BOS ($3,600): Martinez is criminally underpriced heading into this matchup with former Tigers starter Rick Porcello, who allows a higher wOBA to righties despite being one himself, while Martinez delivers against all comers with a .387 wOBA against right-handers to go along with 27 of his 40 extra-base hits. Overall, the right fielder is slashing .311/.378/.557 and would be on pace for a second straight season of 30-plus homers if not for a mid-June wrist injury from which he has fully recovered. There no need to pass up on this extraordinary value just because the opposing pitcher has a good record for a high-scoring team.

Mitch Haniger, ARI at SD ($3,300): Haniger has burst onto the major league scene in a big way, with a career-opening three-game hitting streak that has seen the 2012 38th-overall pick knock in four runs while reaching base at least twice in every contest. Things should only get easier for him against Jarred Cosart, whose ugly 5.03 ERA stems from the previously alluded to combination of poor control and inability to put hitters away. Playing him is a classic low-risk, high-reward move.

Hernan Perez, MIL at SEA ($3,700): He may not get much fanfare languishing away for a terrible Milwaukee team, but Perez has been wreaking havoc from the heart of the Brewers order for a while now. The versatile fielder has a .313/.339/.522 line since July 15, and he has swiped 11 of his 21 stolen bases in that time. Perez has unsurprisingly found more success in his natural split, with a .336 wOBA and six of his 10 homers against southpaws overall. That makes him a dangerous all-around threat against underwhelming part-time starter Wade LeBlanc.
