Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Mike Fiers, HOU at PHI ($44): Fiers cites improved mechanics for his sharp rebound, which has seen him post a 2.25 ERA and a 34 percent strikeout rate over 24 innings in July. The 32-year-old has notched a 7.7 RAA with his fastball this season, while the Phillies are a bottom 10 team against the pitch.

Carlos Martinez, STL vs. COL ($50): For all their firepower, the Rockies remain a bottom 10 team on the road, where they strike out 24 percent of the time. Colorado will enter the contest against Martinez holding the lowest RAA in the league against the slider, a pitch the Cardinals ace throws at a 27 percent clip.

Catcher

Manny Pina, MIL at WAS ($11): Pina has shown more power against same-handed pitchers in 2017, but the rookie could be in line to do more damage against lefties going forward due to the 45 percent hard contact rate he has registered over 62 at-bats. Meanwhile, Gio Gonzalez has allowed a 1.4 HR/9 rate and a 32 percent hard contact rate to right-handers.

First Base

Yonder Alonso, OAK at TOR ($15): In the span of a few short months Marco Estrada has gone from a solid starter to a man who doesn't possess a single above-average offering in his four-pitch arsenal. This should bode well for Alonso, who has logged a 17.0 RAA against the fastball to go along with his .274 ISO against right-handed pitching.

Second Base

Ian Happ, CHC at CWS ($16): Happ has shown tremendous power against righties this season, having notched a .280 ISO over 161 at-bats. Opposition starter James Shields has been beaten up by lefties, allowing a .670 slugging percentage and a .442 wOBA in 20.1 innings.

Third Base

Joey Gallo, TEX vs. MIA ($14): Gallo's flyball rate has hovered around 60 percent for most of the season, which has helped him put points on the board in the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park. He should have ample opportunity to leave the yard against Jose Urena, as his below average walk and strikeout rates have contributed to a 6.82 xFIP against lefties through 41.2 innings.

Shortstop

Asdrubal Cabrera, NYM at SD ($16): Jhoulys Chacin was initially scheduled to start against the Mets on Tuesday, but he received an extra day of rest after feeling tightness in his back. While a potential injury makes for an intriguing target, Chacin would be in our sights regardless, as he has allowed a .505 slugging percentage and a 34 percent hard contact rate to left-handed hitters. Chacin could be a popular pitching play due to his 1.94 ERA at home, but much of that seems to be the result of a .214 BABIP.

Outfield

Bradley Zimmer, CLE vs. LAA ($14): Zimmer has done the bulk of his damage against righties this year, having tallied a .183 ISO and a 37 percent hard contact rate over 142 at-bats. Opposition starter Ricky Nolasco's 6.23 ERA this month has been based on some bad luck, but his fastball still clocks in at -12.7 RAA.

Hunter Renfroe, SD vs. NYM ($15): Renfroe has clubbed the ball indiscriminately of late but has shown more consistent power against lefties overall this season, as evidenced by his .318 ISO and .422 wOBA in 88 at-bats. The slugger draws a favorable matchup against Steven Matz, who has struck out just 15 percent of the right-handed batters he has faced while allowing eight homers over 34.1 innings.

Alex Presley, DET vs. KC ($10): Presley hasn't shown much power to this point but has notched a .358 wOBA and a 40 percent hard contact rate against righties over 85 at-bats. Ian Kennedy has walked nearly 11 percent of the left-handed batters he has faced this season, which has contributed to a 5.51 xFIP.
