FanDuel MLB: Monday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Monday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Mike Leake, STL vs SD ($6,900): It's pretty thin after the top starting pitching options but Leake is coming of a season-best outing in which he struck out 10 en route to 60 fantasy points. He now gets the Padres, who have the second-lowest wOBA against righties (.288) and strike out at the third-highest rate (24.4 percent). Leake has also shown some consistency as of late, scoring at least 27 fantasy points in six of his last nine starts, and he has allowed a .288 wOBA at home as opposed to .322 on the road.

CATCHER

Willson Contreras, CHC vs NYM ($3,100): Contreras, who has been a fixture at the cleanup spot, has reached base safely in his last 10 games, as well as in 23 of his last 24. Steven Matz has pitched well since his call-up but lately he's been gotten knocked around. Amid rumors of arm trouble he has an 5.08 ERA (1.43 WHIP) over his the last month (six starts) and has allowed six home runs.

FIRST BASE

Anthony Rizzo, CHC vs NYM ($3,000): It's interesting that FanDuel has Rizzo listed as the exact same price as Ben Paulsen, who hasn't played in the majors since May. This price is way too low for a player who had hit safely in 22 of 23 games before going 0-for-4 Sunday against Cole Hamels. For his career, Rizzo has hit eft and right-handed pitching pretty equally l, and surprisingly Matz has reverse splits. On top of his noted recent issues, Matz has struggled the most on the road against lefties by giving up a .343 wOBA. Don't be afraid to have more than one Cubbie in your lineup and don't forget about that Kris Bryant fellow.

SECOND BASE

Jonathan Schoop, BAL at NYY ($3,200): For all of the articles out there at the All-Star break about over-achieving players based on ADP, Schoop seems to have been largely ignored. All he's doing is setting a pace to finish with a .300 batting average, around 25 home runs, 90 RBI and 90 runs scored. He's moved up to second in the lineup and all he's done lately is safely reach base in 23 of his last 24 games, with 13 multi-hit outings. The matchup at Yankee Stadium is a good one against Ivan Nova, who has a 6.93 ERA over his last five starts.

THIRD BASE

Danny Valencia, OAK vs HOU ($3,000): Valencia's defense has cost him some playing time lately, but he should be in the lineup either at DH or first base Monday He's a well known lefty-killer with a career wOBA of .380, including a .444 mark this season. Valencia faces off against Dallas Keuchel, an above-average southpaw, though Valencia has gone 7-for-13 with two home runs and a 1.779 OPS against him in his career. His recent days off has driven down his price, so now is a good time to take advantage.

SHORTSTOP

Marcus Semien, OAK vs HOU ($2,400): It's rare to put a pair of teammates in this column and even rarer that there are two pairs of teammates. There is justification for both, and while the Athletics have a lot of lefty-killers, Semien seems to be an afterthought. All he's done this season is hit them enough for a .427 wOBA and, again, Keuchel has not been the same pitcher this year. After allowing a .268 wOBA to right-handed hitters last season, that number has ballooned 76 points to .344 this time around, and it goes up to .377 away from Minute Maid Park. If he allows one home run tonight to a righty, Keuchel will equal last year's total but he will have faced roughly 300 fewer batters.

OUTFIELD

Stephen Piscotty, STL vs SD ($3,600): Piscotty isn't the cheapest but it's worth noting that there are 14 other outfielders at this price or higher. Piscotty have killed left-handed pitching to the tune of a .526 wOBA at home this season. Christian Friedrich hasn't pitched beyond the fifth inning in any of his past four starts, and he has a 6.19 ERA over the last month (six starts). Piscotty has been hot lately as well, scoring at least 21 fantasy points in four of his last seven games.

Juan Lagares, NYM at CHC ($2,800): Lagares is coming off a hot series, going 3-for-9 (plus two walks and a stolen base) against the Phillies with those hits being a double, a triple and a home run. He's always hit left-handed pitching better than righties, and he now faces Jon Lester, who has given up 13 earned runs over his last two starts (4.1 innings) and has allowed nine home runs over his last five starts. Not surprisingly, 14 of the 16 home runs Lester has given up have gone to right-handed hitters.

Justin Upton, DET vs MIN ($2,300): This price is too low for a player with Upton's upside and the drop may be due to his recent bereavement absence. Upton has reached base safely in 13 straight games and has a home run and four doubles during that span. Ricky Nolasco has struggled with a 5.22 ERA this season, and his .360 wOBA against right-handed hitters is a big reason why (10 home runs in 55 innings). This is a cheap way to get part of the Tigers' offense in what appears to be a great matchup.
