**To qualify for recommendations, players must be rostered in fewer than 50 percent of Fantrax Leagues
American Conference Waiver Wire Pickups
Cale Hellums, QB, Army
(7 Percent Rostered)
Prior to the Black Knights' bye week, Hellums was a beast in Week 8 at Tulane with 39 carries for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Over his last three games, he's averaging 31.5 fantasy points with 27.0 rushing attempts per game and seven total rushing scores. The best part is that he's available in a ton of leagues, and the American Conference schedule is soft the rest of the way. Army does have a bye week in Week 12, but other than that, he's a lock in fantasy lineups down the stretch, and in the other rounds of the playoffs.
Wyatt Young, WR, North Texas
(43 Percent Rostered)
Now that QB Drew Mestemaker (51 percent rostered) no longer qualifies for this article, it's time to go after one of his top weapons. When you throw for over 600 yards in the game, you tend to have a lot of weapons. Young has been one of the most impactful over the last three games at 32.1 fantasy points per game. He's coming off two straight 100-yard receiving performances, and he has three straight games with double-digit targets. The game against Navy is going to be a lot of fun, so make sure to get a piece of this North Texas offense while you still can.
Week 9 Rewind: North Texas QB Drew Mestemaker (40.6 points - 37/49, 608 YDS, 4 TD, 1 INT, 5 ATT, -7 YDS, 1 FL) & Temple TE/WR Peter Clarke (10.1 points - 3/3 TAR, 71 YDS)
ACC Waiver Wire Pickups
Kyron Drones, QB, Virginia Tech
(34 Percent Rostered)
Drones was one of the best in all of college football last week in Virginia Tech's inspiring 2OT win against Cal. The dual-threat QB had 44.5 fantasy points including three TD passes and 21 carries for 137 yards and two more scores. He's averaging 14.1 rushing attempts per game, and because the Hokies' defense is also bad, he's racked up 14 touchdowns through the air. Drones has a ton of upside, and he's going to need another huge performance if they're going to knock off Louisville this week.
Kendrick Raphael, RB, Cal
(25 Percent Rostered)
Raphael is Cal's best player, and it absolutely needs to find ways to get him the ball even more. He has a touchdown in four straight games, and he is coming off a game where he racked up three touchdowns in a loss at Virginia Tech. He's been a reliable fantasy starter over the last four games at 23.4 fantasy points per game. With upcoming games against Virginia, Louisville, Stanford, and SMU to end the season, there's a great chance he ends the regular season on an eight-game TD streak. WR Jacob De Jesus (20 percent rostered) is also in play.
Week 9 Rewind: Louisville QB Miller Moss (22.5 points - 15/27, 187 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT, 4 ATT, 10 YDS, 2 TD, 1 FL) & Cal RB Kendrick Raphael (29.7 points - 20 ATT, 71 YDS, 3 TD, 3/4 TAR, 16 YDS)
BIG 12 Waiver Wire Pickups
Conner Weigman, QB, Houston
(28 Percent Rostered)
Weigman and the Cougars are cooking with three straight wins. The quarterback has been great in his last three games at 33.8 fantasy points per contest including six passing scores and four touchdowns on the ground. The talented transfer from Texas A&M has at least three total touchdowns in three straight games. With West Virginia and UCF up next on the schedule, he'll have a realistic shot at extending that streak before a bye week for the team. Could this team win the Big 12? Not sure, but it certainly is going to try.
Boden Groen, TE, Kansas
(13 Percent Rostered)
Over the last two games, Groen has been one of the most targeted tight ends in all of college football with 21 opportunities in losses to Texas Tech and Kansas State. The Jayhawks' D shouldn't struggle as much with Oklahoma State up next, but it probably does mean that Groen can add his fourth touchdown of the season and be a legitimate starter for fantasy lineups this week. The targets should continue this week and for the rest of the year at Kansas.
Week 9 Rewind: TCU RB Kevorian Barnes (2.7 points - 8 ATT, 27 YDS *Left with Injury & Later Returned) & Kansas State TE Garrett Oakley (0.0 points - 0/2 TAR)
Big Ten Waiver Wire Pickups
King Miller, RB, USC
(42 Percent Rostered)
Because the Trojans were on a bye this last week, Miller has not yet eclipsed the 50 percent roster percentage. That means he's available in a bunch of leagues, and he's received 20 touches in each of his last two games. Although he didn't see the same success against Notre Dame in Week 8 that he saw against UCLA (28.2 fantasy points), he was still effective with 10.4 fantasy points. If he can do that against the Fighting Irish and their elite defense, he'll have no problem doing some damage at Nebraska this week. He then gets Northwestern the next week.
KJ Duff, WR, Rutgers
(35 Percent Rostered)
Hello KJ, as he exploded for a career-high 241 yards versus Purdue last week. I thought he would have a big week, but I didn't think it would be that big. He has a touchdown in five of eight games this year and he's going to have a decent chance at making that ratio even better with upcoming games at Illinois and at home against Maryland. The Scarlet Knights are going to need to throw the ball versus those two teams and Duff has emerged as the best receiver with Ian Strong (81 percent rostered) dealing with an undisclosed injury.
Week 9 Rewind: Rutgers WR KJ Duff (39.1 points - 6/7 TAR, 241 YDS, 1 TD) & Iowa QB Mark Gronowski (17.8 points - 12/19, 135 YDS, 1 TD, 9 ATT, 24 YDS, 1 TD)
C-USA Waiver Wire Pickups
Jekail Middlebrook, RB, Middle Tennessee
(29 Percent Rostered)
Middlebrook is a versatile back with 71.6 rushing yards and 31.1 receiving yards per game. While he has just one 100-yard rushing performance on the season, he routinely goes over 100 total yards when you consider the work he does in the passing game. Middle Tennessee should rack up a ton of yards against Jacksonville State this week, so look for Middlebrook to have a breakout game Wednesday night in a primetime slot on national television. It's not been a surprise that he's racked up three touchdowns over the last three games after not scoring at all in his first four games.
Gavin Harris, TE, New Mexico State
(8 Percent Rostered)
Harris is available in a ton of leagues and is averaging a steady 9.3 fantasy points per game. At 3.4 catches on 5.6 targets per game, it's a surprise that he has just one touchdown. If that volume continues, there's a good chance he'll have at least a score or two against Western Kentucky this week. This position is extremely difficult to predict, but it can be extremely valuable to get a handful of catches and targets per game instead of chasing the high upside of some tight ends.
Week 9 Rewind: FIU RB Kejon Owens (26.4 points - 20 ATT, 151 YDS, 1 TD, 2/2 TAR, 3 YDS) & Middle Tennessee WR Nahzae Cox (12.7 points - 3/9 TAR, 37 YDS, 1 TD)
MAC Waiver Wire Pickups
Jyrin Johnson, TE, Bowling Green
(4 Percent Rostered)
Going to stick with Johnson as he has at least four targets in six of eight games this year, including the last three games. Buffalo has one of the worst pass defenses in the conference, and that's who the Falcons go up against this week. Bowling Green is coming off an embarrassing loss to Kent State, and Johnson was the top producing receiver. He's going to need to make an even bigger impact if they don't want to lose again.
Ta'Quan Roberson, QB, Buffalo
(13 Percent Rostered)
Since we can't go back to Victor Snow (68 percent rostered), let's go with Roberson at QB. It wasn't long ago when he threw for 403 yards at UMass in Week 8, and he'll have a chance to do something similar against Bowling Green this week. The reason I'm excited to recommend the Falcons' tight end is because I'm thinking this game has the most shootout potential in the MAC slate. For that reason, Roberson is also a strong play as he has Snow and Nik McMillan (5 percent rostered) as his best weapons. He did just throw four interceptions at Akron, so this assumes he keeps the starting job for this upcoming game.
Week 9 Rewind: Buffalo Victor Snow (15.1 points - 7/8 TAR, 56 YDS, 3 ATT, 25 YDS) & Bowling Green TE Jyrin Johnson (8.3 points - 3/6 TAR, 53 YDS)
Mountain West Waiver Wire Pickups
Keagan Johnson, WR, New Mexico
(45 Percent Rostered)
Although Johnson produced just 5.5 fantasy points last week, he's still an extremely strong play this week against UNLV. The Lobos cruised to an easy 33-14 win over Utah State, and it was actually TE Cade Keith (0 percent rostered) who ended up being the top receiver in that game. The game at UNLV should be much more competitive and Johnson has commanded 10 targets per game over his last five contests. He's one of the best plays this week, so go out and get him if he's available on the waiver wire.
Jackson Harris, WR, Hawaii
(23 Percent Rostered)
Harris has three straight 100-yard receiving games and it can be argued that he's Hawaii's top receiver. Pofele Ashlock (99 percent rostered) is averaging 17.4 fantasy points per game (FPPG), while Harris is at 16.4 FPPG. The difference is that Ashlock has six touchdowns while Harris has five. Harris has been the most consistent receiver and more highly targeted of late. Either way, Hawaii is going to sling it around and it can easily support two receivers for fantasy rosters.
Week 9 Rewind: San Diego State RB Lucky Sutton (22.1 points - 21 ATT, 131 YDS, 1 TD) & New Mexico WR Keagan Johnson (5.5 points - 3/5 TAR, 25 YDS)
SEC Waiver Wire Pickups
Davon Booth, RB, Mississippi State
(14 Percent Rostered)
Booth has been one of the best in the SEC over the last two weeks with an average of 28.1 fantasy points in games against Florida and Texas. He's available in a ton of leagues and this week's opponent, Arkansas, has one of the worst defenses in the country. This could be a monster performance for Booth if he receives at least 20 carries for the third straight game. Even if he doesn't get that many carries, he's likely to add a score or two as he already has seven on the season. WR Anthony Evans (18 percent rostered) is also a recommendation for the week.
Isaiah Sategna, WR, Oklahoma
(44 Percent Rostered)
Sategna has at least 11 targets in four of his last five games. This is a different Oklahoma offense this year, and the transfer receiver from Arkansas is making that known. He's in the midst of a career year with 43 catches (on 69 targets) for 624 yards and five touchdowns. This Sooners team no longer looks to establish the run before throwing the ball. Since Week 3, Sategna is averaging 21.3 FPPG and that's while dealing with multiple quarterbacks in that stretch. He's set up for a huge game at Tennessee.
Week 9 Rewind: Oklahoma RB Tory Blaylock (2.0 points - 6 ATT, 10 YDS, 1/1 TAR, 0 YDS) & Tennessee WR Braylon Staley (19.5 points - 6/7 TAR, 105 YDS)
Sun Belt Waiver Wire Pickups
Lunch Winfield, QB, Louisiana-Lafayette
(5 Percent Rostered)
Since taking over the starting role in Week 5, Winfield is averaging 27.6 FPPG. He's struggled in the passing game, however, has been great with his legs at 17.5 carries for 97.3 yards and 1.0 touchdowns per game over that stretch. There's some optimistic caution here, though, as the Ragin' Cajuns have lost three games in a row. It's possible Louisiana could move away from Lunch, but if it doesn't, it plays at South Alabama which has fared poorly against opposing quarterbacks.
Wayne Knight, RB, JMU
(40 Percent Rostered)
Knight has received at least 12 carries in five straight games and has a rushing touchdown in four of five of those games. He's also been extremely active in the passing game this year with 23 catches for 165 yards on 35 targets. The Dukes should have the potential to score a ton of points at Texas State this week. It's also a bonus that JMU has no more bye weeks, so Knight can stay locked in the fantasy line-up for the rest of the year.
Week 9 Rewind: Arkansas State QB Jaylen Raynor (31.0 points - 24/37, 216 YDS, 1 INT, 15 ATT, 54 YDS, 3 TD) & Old Dominion WR Tre' Brown (4.9 points - 2/4 TAR, 29 YDS)
INDEPENDENTS & PAC-12 Waiver Wire Pickups
Joe Fagnano, QB, UConn
(14 Percent Rostered)
No reason to go away from Fagnano yet, as UConn goes up against UAB in a game that could feature the most points of all the games on the slate. Fagnano is playing extremely well, as he has at least 344 passing yards and three touchdowns in each of his last three games. He has some monster statistics this year with 2,262 passing yards, 20 total touchdowns, and zero turnovers. While he doesn't have the rushing ability of other quarterbacks in this article, his passing volume is elite, and he's well worth a pick up if you need another signal caller in the lineup.
Week 9 Rewind: UConn QB Joe Fagnano (29.8 points - 32/48, 344 YDS, 3 TD, 3 ATT, 10 YDS)
DEFENSE & KICKER RECOMMENDATIONS
Defense
Boise State
(vs. Fresno State) - After a bumpy start, the Broncos are rolling now and their defense just racked up 16 fantasy points in a 24-3 win at Nevada. They're available in 69 percent of leagues too.
Kansas
(vs. Oklahoma State) - I don't love the Jayhawks' D, but I do love whoever plays Oklahoma State. Available in 79 percent of leagues.
Houston
(vs. West Virginia) - The Cougars have been surprising this year and they're averaging 8.2 FPPG. Rostered in just 36 percent of leagues and should shut down a struggling West Virginia offense.
Week 9 Rewind: North Texas vs. Charlotte (6.0 points - 20 PA, 2 SK), Central Michigan vs. UMass (7.5 points - 13 PA, 3 SK, 1 TA) & Georgia Tech vs. Syracuse (7.0 points - 16 PA, 2 SK, 1 TA)
Kicker
Nicolas Radicic, Indiana
- Apparently, Indiana's offense is unstoppable. Radicic has at at least five extra point attempts in his last two games. Even if he's not kicking field goals, his floor is elevated, and he's rostered in just 27 percent of leagues.
Kali Nguma, North Texas
- Available in 78 percent of leagues and racks up points because North Texas is constantly moving the ball towards the red zone. He has double-digit performances in each of his last two games.
Alex McPherson, Auburn
- McPherson is coming off a game where he converted six field goals and scored 19 fantasy points. He should be rostered in more leagues than 38 percent.
Week 9 Rewind: Virginia Will Bettridge (5.0 points - 1/1 FG, 2/2 XP), Arkansas State Clune Van Andel (10.0 points - 2/2 FG, 4/4 XP), Baylor Connor Hawkins (8.0 points - 2/2 FG, 2/2 XP)
