This Week's Northern Trust Open

A California friend of mine once described Riviera Country Club as "The Revered Riviera," putting on additional respect for the course. After two dates, 1929 and 1930, Riviera played host to the Los Angeles Open from 1945 through 1953. With only one other venue in 1983, Riviera has been the place since 1973.

When Ben Hogan won thrice here - 1942, 1947, 1948 - the course took on the nickname of Hogan's Alley. However, nobody gave a nickname when Arnold Palmer won three times here in 1963, 1966 and 1967.

Fred Couples, winner in 1990 and 1992, is in the field for the 31st time, besting the record that had been held by Gene Littler's 30 starts. Cory Pavin, champion in 1994 and 1995, also is in the field this week.

Tiger Woods has had 11 starts here, two as an amateur, nine as pro with his last appearance in 2006. His best finishes were a solo second in 1998 and a tie for second in 1999.

The last first-time winner was Len Mattiace in 2002. Veterans usually do well.

The event attracts International players who are prepping for next week's Match Play event: Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell, Adam Scott and Lee Westwood are in the field.

Last year, Bill Haas dropped a 45-putt to win over Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley on the second extra hole. Haas had a 7-under 72-68-68-69=277.

Last Five Winners and Runners-Up

2012 - Bill Haas, 7-under 277 (P1); Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley, 277
2011 - Aaron Baddeley, 12-under 272; Vijay Singh, 274
2010 - Steve Stricker, 16-under 268; Luke Donald, 270
2009 - Phil Mickelson, 15-under 269; Steve Stricker, 270
2008 - Phil Mickelson, 12-under 272; Jeff Quinney, 274

2012 Low Rounds (course record: 61, Ted Tryba in 1999)

Round 1: 5-under 66, Phil Mickelson
Round 2: 6-under 65, Jimmy Walker, Jarrod Lyle
Round 3: 5-under 66, Keegan Bradley, Bryce Molder, Aaron Baddeley
Round 4: 7-under 64, Sergio Garcia

All players listed are in the field except Tryba, Lyle, Stricker, Mattiace and Quinney.

This courses has tight fairways and small greens, making driving accuracy and scrambling a must. Kikuyu grass is tough in the rough, testing approaches off the fairways. Experience helps greatly here as does getting birdies at the par-4s.
