Nearly loses ear in defeat
November 7, 2020
Brahimaj lost to Max Griffin via TKO (elbow) at 2:03 of Round 3 at UFC on ESPN+ 40 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Brahimaj got off to a bit of a slow start, as Griffin was constantly on his bicycle and able to avoid any danger from takedown attempts. While Brahimaj put together a few effective combos in Round 1, Griffin appeared to have the lead in the overall striking total. Brahimaj came out fast in the second, but absorbed a square groin strike and took a little over a minute to recover. Even after the restart, Brahimaj continued to absorb jabs and get the worse of the striking exchanges. He was starting to wear the damage pretty heavy by the end of the second frame. Despite being down on the scorecards, he came out with an effective left jab in the third that sent Griffin backwards. After absorbing another groin strike that was followed up with a brief stoppage, the action continued. Griffin landed a hard elbow to the side of his head and initiated a clinch situation, but it quickly was noted that the elbow nearly detached his ear from his head. After noticing it dangling, referee Mark Smith immediately called things off. Brahimaj was likely on his way to losing his debut anyway, but will now likely be sidelined an extended period of time, with reconstructive surgery likely in his immediate future.
New debut date
September 16, 2020
Brahimaj is expected to take on Max Griffin in a welterweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for Nov. 7, MMAJunkie.com reports.
Originally scheduled to make his UFC debut against Takashi Sato in Vegas back in June, Brahimaj was forced to withdraw after one of his cornermen tested positive for COVID-19. It was never reported whether or not Brahimaj tested positive himself. The Fortis MMA prospect has put together a 4-2 record under the LFA banner since getting the call to the UFC, with all four victories coming by way of submission and both losses via decision. He'll take on a fighter in Griffin who is on his last legs with the UFC, losing four of his past five fights.
Not fighting Saturday
June 26, 2020
Brahimaj will no longer fight at UFC Vegas 4 on Saturday after one of his cornermen tested positive for COVID-19, Marc Raimondi of ESPN reports.
With Brahimaj off the card as a precautionary measure, the UFC has signed Jason Witt to replacement him the scheduled welterweight matchup against Takashi Sato. It's unclear when Brahimaj's next chance to debut will be after another tough break.
Making Octagon debut Saturday
June 22, 2020
Brahimaj (8-2-0) is scheduled to face Takashi Sato (15-3-0) in a welterweight fight Saturday at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Farah Hanoun of USA Today reports.
A late addition to the card, Brahimaj will be making his UFC long-awaited debut in Las Vegas after he was previously forced to withdraw from a matchup with Miguel Baeza on Dana White's Contender Series 19 one year earlier. Brahimaj will enter the Octagon as a winner in two of his last three bouts, but he hasn't fought since March 2019.
