Jhonata Diniz

Brazil
Take decision in UFC 317 opener
Diniz defeated Alvin Hines via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC 317 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It was an underwhelming performance from Diniz as upwards of a -500 favorite. He was clearly the more accomplished striker and did enough over the first two rounds to build a substantial lead on the scorecards, but Diniz gassed out in Round 3 and was generally unimpressive for the duration of the fight. The good news is that his takedown defense again held up, as he stuffed 9-of-10 tries from Hines. The Brazilian improves to 3-1 in the UFC, in addition to picking up a knockout win on Dana White's Contender Series back in September 2023.

Will face new opponent
Diniz will no longer face Justin Tafa (undisclosed) at UFC 317 on June 28 and will instead take on Alvin Hines, according to Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Diniz didn't fight against Vitor Petrino in March after the latter withdrew from the fight due to an apparent elbow injury, and now he'll have to prepare for another opponent. This bout will be Diniz's first since suffering a loss to Marcin Tybura at UFC 309 on Nov. 16, 2024. He's gone 8-1 in his career at the pro level, but it remains to be seen if he'll have enough time to prepare for a new opponent since this change comes just two weeks before the event.

He's gone 8-1 in his career at the pro level, but since Diniz is 33 years old, it's unclear how much gas he'll have left in the tank to continue rising in the standings.

Booked to fight Petrino
Diniz will fight Vitor Petrino at UFC 313 on March 8 in Las Vegas, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Diniz is coming off his first career loss, a TKO (doctor stoppage) defeat to Marcin Tybura in November. He will look to bounce back from that as he takes on Petrino who has lost two straight fights, most recently to Dustin Jacoby via KO (punch) in December.

Suffers first career defeat
Diniz lost to Marcin Tybura via TKO (doctor stoppage) at 5:00 of Round 2 at UFC 309 on Saturday in New York City.
ANALYSIS
Diniz was originally scheduled to fight Derrick Lewis in Edmonton two weeks ago. "The Black Beast" withdrew a day before the event, and Diniz was re-booked here against Tybura. He landed a couple massive blows in the opening minute of the fight before it all fell apart. Diniz has zero grappling game to speak of and was essentially finished the second things got to the mat. He defended fairly well the remainder of Round 1, but Tybura opened up from mount in Round 2, crushing Diniz with elbows. While he survived the frame (barely), the doctor's checked him out prior to Round 3 and pulled the plug. This was just the Brazilian's ninth professional fight at age 33. The power is legitimate, but the rest of his game is a work in progress, and Diniz simply may not have enough time to make the necessary improvements in other areas.

ANALYSIS
Diniz was scheduled to fight Derrick Lewis (undisclosed) at UFC Edmonton on Saturday, but the former will now face off against Tybura after Lewis was forced to withdraw from the fight. Diniz has yet to take a loss eight bouts into his professional MMA career, and he'll look to secure his third UFC win against an opponent who has dropped two of his last three.
