FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Tanner Roark, WAS vs. SFG ($8,700): There's certainly no shortage of arms available Sunday, so going for a bargain play will come with plenty of risk, but Roark may be able to create a pitchers' duel against Giants starter Madison Bumgarner. Roark has worked into the seventh inning in 16 of his 22 starts this season and held the Giants to one run and four hits in seven innings on July 28. San Francisco also enters the contest with just a .140 ISO and .316 wOBP against righties.

Toronto's Marcus Stroman ($7,700) has rediscovered his strikeout prowess of late and also merits consideration for bargain shoppers.

Catcher

Gary Sanchez, NYY vs. CLE ($2,400): It's a very limited sample size but Sanchez has hit decently since being given the opportunity, going 5-for-19 in five games with three doubles. The upside is minimal but so is the cost and he has a somewhat surprisingly manageable matchup with Carlos Carrasco on Sunday. Carrasco has been better against left-handed bats this year, owning an 11.45 K/9 rate on the road compared to 7.71 away from home against right-handers. Sanchez gives you a puncher's chance at 10 or more fantasy points, a total he's reached in three straight games.

First Base

Miguel Cabrera, DET vs. NYM ($3,500): Cabrera is simply too hot to be priced this modestly. After hitting .412 in July he's gone 8-of-17 (.471) in August, including multi-hit games in four of five contests. He's been notably better against righties (.417 wOBP) than lefties (.317 wOBP), so a matchup with Mets ace Jacob deGrom should not scare buyers away.

Second Base

Devon Travis, TOR at KAN ($3,000): Regular readers of mine know well my affinity for Travis. Well, it's time to read it again, as Travis has seven hits in his last 13 at-bats, three of which have left the yard. Almost as importantly he's struck out only twice, a nice upgrade from his season-long 20.8 percent strikeout rate. All of his home runs have come against righties and he has a .399 wOBP against them heading into a matchup with Yordano Ventura.

Third Base

Jake Lamb, ARI vs. MIL ($3,100): Lamb's second half slump, which includes a .230 batting average and 17 strikeouts in 16 games, has his price plummeting. He's hit safely in three straight games and six of his last seven entering Saturday though and remains a killer against right-handed arms. Lamb owns a .423 wOBP and .363 ISO against righties at home and faces a struggling Jimmy Nelson, who hasn't lasted more than five innings in his last three starts and has surrendered nine homers and a .344 wOBP to lefties to date. Baltimore's Pedro Alvarez ($3,500) also merits consideration.

Shortstop

Brad Miller, TAM vs. MIN ($3,500): Miller saw a three-game home run streak snapped Saturday but he still topped 21 fantasy points for the fourth straight game. He sports a .347 wOBP against right-handers heading into a matchup against Twins righty Kyle Gibson, who has allowed eight runs over his last 10.2 innings and a .318 batting average to lefties in 2016.

Outfield

Mark Trumbo, BAL at CWS ($3,500): The price doesn't scream "Buy me!" for a player who has only three home runs since the All-Star break and is 0-for-9 with six strikeouts in his career against Sunday starter James Shields. However, not rostering some share of the Orioles' potent offense against the combustible Shields would be a mistake. Shields has allowed a .345 wOBP to lefties while Trumbo leads O's regulars with a .383 wOBP against righties while also boasting a .268 ISO.

Yasmany Tomas, ARI vs. MIL ($3,400): This looks like a matchup made in heaven for one of the league's hottest hitters. Tomas entered Saturday with four home runs over his last three games and has reached double-digit fantasy points in six of his last nine outings. He's gone deep twice in six at-bats against Nelson, who has allowed three long balls in his last three starts en route to 10 total earned runs.

Brandon Moss, STL vs. ATL ($3,400): Moss is the third of three mid-tier outfielders who has a plus matchup Sunday. Facing erratic Mike Foltynewicz, who has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts, Moss will get a chance to build on the robust .430 wOBP and .401 ISO he owns against right-handers.
