Which Week 1 NFL Games Were Projected As Close?

It's important to note that games which have small point spreads for NFL betting might not be projected to be that close in a sample of AI simulations, such as the ones we ran. Also, one person's AI search might be different from another's. We ran the query regarding NFL Week 1 simulations on Sept. 4, asking ChatGPT to use current rosters as of that date.

The only game that came out as an even 5-5 split was Sunday's game between expected NFC North contenders, when the Detroit Lions visit the Green Bay Packers (4:25 p.m. Eastern, CBS).

Futures wagering props at sports betting apps have this as a tight division race. And when NFL.com assembled a panel of its experts to predict division winners and playoff teams for the 2025-26 NFL season, 14 of them picked Green Bay to win the NFC North while 13 chose Detroit to capture its third consecutive division crown.

In our simulations, the Packers and Lions had identical average margins of victory, at 3.4 points apiece. Legal, regulated U.S. sportsbook operators offering NFL betting promos have this game as a tight one as well, with Green Bay favored by 1.5 to 2.5 points.

Which Other Week 1 NFL Games Are Projected As Tossups?

It might come as a surprise to many (it sure did to us) that tonight's game, with the Dallas Cowboys visiting the Philadelphia Eagles, was projected to be as close as it is via AI analysis.

The Cowboys, who always seem to have some drama surrounding them, stepped up the panic meter among many of their fans in the past several days by trading superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are the defending Super Bowl champions. Philly has odds ranging from +650 to +750 to repeat, with customers using the FanDuel promo code seeing the best price at +750 as of Sept. 4.

Yet 10 simulations on tonight's game (8:20 p.m. Eastern, NBC) had the Eagles with only a 6-4 edge with an average margin of victory pegged at 7.8 points per win. Dallas had an average MOV at 7.75 for the four times that the visitors were projected to win.

Three other teams were projected to win six out of 10 simulations – all visiting teams for Week 1. Point spreads at top online sportsbooks also indicate that these games are expected to be close.

Pittsburgh is favored by 2.5 to 3 points when Aaron Rodgers makes his Steelers debut against one of his former clubs, the New York Jets. The Miami Dolphins are slight underdogs at the Indianapolis Colts, but AI slightly favors the Fins.

And on Monday night (8:15 p.m., ESPN and ABC) the other two NFC North teams clash when the Vikings visit the Bears. AI has Minnesota winning six of 10 simulations by an average of 3.5 points – but it's interesting that Chicago's average MOV in its four projected wins is 6.0 points. DraftKings Sportsbook has the Vikings at +2800 odds to win the Super Bowl.

Week 1 NFL Projections Q&A

Q: How did ChatGPT simulate NFL Week 1 games?
A: RotoWire ran 10 simulations for every Week 1 matchup using ChatGPT, with rosters updated as of September 4, 2025. Each game produced projected scores, a winner, and a calculated average margin of victory (MOV). This allowed us to compare not only who wins most often but also how decisively they win.

Q: Which teams dominated the ChatGPT simulations?
A: Several teams stood out in the AI's projections. The Denver Broncos won nine out of 10 games against the Tennessee Titans, with an average margin of victory (MOV) of +9.2. The Houston Texans also looked strong, taking nine of 10 over the Los Angeles Rams with an average MOV of +9.0. San Francisco rounded out the dominant group, winning eight of 10 against Seattle with nearly a +10 average MOV.

Q: What were the closest or most balanced matchups in the simulations?
A: A few games were nearly even and one was tied after 10 simulated games. The Lions and Packers split 5–5, with each side showing an identical 3.4 MOV. Philadelphia and Dallas played a razor-thin series as well, with the Eagles winning 6–4 but both sides averaging about a touchdown margin in their victories (7.8 for PHI, 7.75 for DAL). Pittsburgh and the Jets also split tightly, with each team's average MOV set at 4.0.
