Can't overcome slow start
August 1, 2020
Gutierrez fought to a unanimous draw (28-28, 28-28, 28-28) against Cody Durden at UFC on ESPN+ 31 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It couldn't have been a worse start for the (-260) betting favorite, as Gutierrez was taken down early in the frame and allowed Durden to take his back. Durden piled on a striking lead while holding this position for the rest of the round, potentially picking up a 10-8 in the process. The second round fared much better for Gutierrez, as he was able to control the striking game with steady shots to the legs and body. While he was taken down in the final minute of Round 2, Gutierrez locked in a sneaky arm bar attempt and nearly scored a submission. The third round started in the striking game, and was paused briefly after Gutierrez absorbed a groin strike roughly 90 seconds in. Knowing he was going against a fighter taking the fight on short notice, he hardly took any time and jumped back into action. Gutierrez was by far the fresher fighter in the final minutes, as Durden's takedown threats became increasingly labored. As the fight neared the finish, Gutierrez was dominating the significant striking battle and landed multiple power shots. While Gutierrez finished strong, it wasn't quite enough to overcome his slow start.

Easy win in return from injury
May 30, 2020
Gutierrez defeated Vince Morales via TKO (leg kicks) at 4:27 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It was a dominant effort from Gutierrez against a clearly inferior opponent. It was made all the more impressive by the fact Gutierrez is just nine months removed from an ACL tear suffered last August. The New Jersey made a constant effort to smash Morales with leg kicks and it paid off. This was a smart stoppage by referee Jason Herzog. Gutierrez had Morales in a boatload of trouble and it only would have gotten worse had the fight been allowed to continued. Gutierrez has won three in a row since dropping his UFC debut back in November 2018.
Slated for May 30 clash
May 21, 2020
Gutierrez is expected to fight Vince Morales in a bantamweight matchup at the May 30 UFC event that could take place in Las Vegas, reports.
Despite coming up short in The Ultimate Fighter: Heavy Hitters Finale back in November of 2018, Gutierrez has earned victories in each of his first two UFC bouts since signing with the promotion. He stands two inches taller and sports a significantly better defense against haymakers than Morales, but Gutierrez surrenders three inches of reach and lands north of a significant strike less per minute. Gutierrez will need to put that defense to good use, as both fighters typically prefer to remain upright in the Octagon.
