Remains undefeated in UFC
April 17, 2021
Cortez defeated Justine Kish via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Cortez has had a lousy last 36 hours despite emerging with the win. She missed weight by half a pound Friday morning and had to forfeit 20 percent of her purse to Kish in order for this fight to continue. Cortez then put forth a so-so performance in which she was fortunate to get the judges' decision. Tracy did a nice job of racking up control time in Round 1 on the strength of her wrestling, but Kish slowly got back into the fight on the strength of her striking. Cortez absorbed way too many power shots, including early in Round 3 in which she was knocked down. Cortez didn't look anywhere near the part of a -310 favorite. Of course, Cortez is just 27 years old and has all of 10 professional fights under her belt. She has talent, and everything else should fall into place should she be able to get her weight cut under control.
Misses weight by half pound
April 17, 2021
Cortez missed weight by a half pound for her flyweight matchup against Justine Kish on Saturday, but the bout will proceed as scheduled.
Cortez will have to forfeit 20 percent of her fight purse after weighing in at 126.5 pounds, barely missing the flyweight limit for a non-title fight. This isn't the first time Cortez has had some drama on the scales, as officials said she missed her mark for her bantamweight debut back in November of 2019, though that ruling was later overturned due to a scale calibration issue. There were no calibration issues during Friday morning's weigh-in, however, though Cortez still enters the fight as approximately a (-335) betting favorite.
Facing Justine Kish
February 2, 2021
Cortez is set to take on Justine Kish in a flyweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for April 17, reports.
Cortez has won eight straight fights, including her first two with the UFC. She most recently beat Stephanie Egger by unanimous decision in October. Kish, on the other hand, has been in a bit of a rough patch, losing three of her last four fights. Cortez was listed as a (-210) favorite with the fight several weeks away.
Winning streak hits eight
October 10, 2020
Cortez defeated Stephanie Egger via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
Cortez was originally scheduled to face Bea Malecki here before the latter withdrew in late-September due to undisclosed reasons. Cortez has less than ten professional fights under her belt, but she looked like a seasoned veteran compared to Egger. She was calm and composed in a fight that took place in close quarters, and Cortez allowed Egger to generate virtually zero offense outside of one big upkick. Cortez has now won eight fights in a row since dropping her professional debut back in August 2018. The Arizona native won't turn 27 years old until the middle of December.
New opponent for Saturday
October 5, 2020
Cortez will now be taking on UFC newcomer Stephanie Egger in a bantamweight matchup scheduled for Oct. 10 on Fight Island, Aaron Bronsteter of reports.
Cortez was originally set to fight Bea Malecki, but Malecki withdrew late last week for unspecified reasons. She'll now get a new opponent in Egger who is three inches taller, but Cortez is still the younger fighter with more UFC experience. The former Contender Series fighter enters as approximately a (-240) betting favorite as of the the beginning of fight week.
