2025 U.S. Open: American Tennis Tries to get Back on Track Saturday

Third-round play continues Saturday at the U.S. Open from the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. A WTA underdog who has been a sneaky tough out in majors this year looks to upset a perennial Grand Slam underperformer, while an American seed could give the fans something to cheer about after a tough day Friday for U.S.A. men's tennis.

All men's singles matches at Grand Slams such as the U.S. Open are best of five sets, while women's singles matches are best of three sets. A mix of players' previous hard court results, recent form and stylistic matchups can help pinpoint intriguing betting opportunities, both among favorites likely to cruise to victory and underdogs ready to pull off upsets. The aforementioned underdogs are highlighted in the Upset Alert section, the Lock It In section covers players who can safely be viewed as favorites, while the Value Bets section recommends enticing options in matchups that are considered closer to toss-ups.

U.S. Open Tennis Picks: Upset Alert

Laura Siegemund (+290) vs. Ekaterina Alexandrova

Siegemund has raised her level at Grand Slams this year, notching a top-five win over Qinwen Zheng at the Australian Open and pushing Aryna Sabalenka to 6-4 in the third set of the Wimbledon quarterfinals after beating sixth-ranked Madison Keys. The veteran German added another marquee win over No. 20 seed Siana Shnaider in the first round of the U.S. Open, so she won't be intimidated against Shnaider's Russian compatriot Alexandrova, who is seeded seven spots higher. Alexandrova's a big hitter who struggles when her timing gets thrown off, and Siegemund will do everything she can to make that happen by using a variety of spins and slices. Nerves have been a problem for Alexandrova in majors throughout her career, which is why she has never past the third round of the U.S. Open in eight previous appearances.

Daria Kasatkina (+275) vs. Naomi Osaka

Kasatkina has had a down year, but she's still ranked six spots ahead of Osaka at No. 18, and the Russian-turned-Australian has been a top-20 staple over the past four years while finishing in the top 10 twice over that span. Osaka has a massive edge in serving ability, as Kasatkina has arguably the weakest serve in the top 50, but Kasatkina's superior court coverage and clean ball striking from the base line should allow the latter to dominate extended rallies. Even with Osaka currently in her best form of the season, her lack of consistency over a larger sample since returning to the tour makes Kasatkina an appealing underdog.

Honorable Mention

Flavio Cobolli (+215) vs. Lorenzo Musetti

U.S. Open Tennis Odds: Lock It In

Jaume Munar (-250) vs. Zizou Bergs

Munar's playing the best tennis of his career at age 28. He currently boasts the highest ranking of his career at No. 44, and the Spaniard has been at his best in majors this year. His 5-3 Grand Slam record in 2025 doesn't do Munar's level justice, as four of the wins have come against top-60 competition while two of his three losses have been five-setters against top-15 opponents. Munar's coming off an impressive straight-sets win over No. 31 seed Gabriel Diallo, while Bergs is in the third round due to a lucky break, as he got a free pass in the second round when Jack Draper (arm) withdrew. The 48th-ranked Belgian beat 118th-ranked Chun-Hsin Tseng in the first round for what was only Bergs' second win in his last 10 matches.

Marta Kostyuk (-380) vs. Diane Parry

The 28th-ranked Kostyuk has consistently outplayed the 107th-ranked Parry the past few years, as injuries have been the only thing preventing the big-hitting Ukrainian from holding down a top-20 spot consistently. Kostyuk has won the last six matches she was able to finish, all against opponents ranked higher than Parry, whose path to the third round consisted of beating the husk of Petra Kvitova in the Czech star's swan song, then outlasting 82nd-ranked Renata Zarazua in a match tiebreak after Zarazua knocked off Madison Keys in a first-round match that featured 89 unforced errors from the sixth-seeded American.

Honorable Mention

Amanda Anisimova (-450) vs. Jaqueline Cristian

U.S. Open Tennis Predictions: Value Bets

Tommy Paul (+110) vs. Alexander Bublik

Paul's 10-spot edge in the rankings is well deserved, and the American has been a consistent Grand Slam performer, having reached the Round of 16 here each of the past two years and made three quarterfinals in his previous five Grand Slam appearances. Bublik is attempting to reach the Round of 16 for only the third time in 27 majors, as he's rarely maintained his focus and level long enough to put together deep runs in the best-of-five set format. Bublik has the edge on serve while Paul's the superior returner and mover, but this matchup should have no shortage of long, entertaining rallies. Ultimately, Paul's ability to grind out key points could prove to be the difference, especially with the American crowd in his corner. The American holds a 3-0 edge in their head-to-head.

Beatriz Haddad Maia (+125) vs. Maria Sakkari

Both of these women are well-rounded, athletic players who have been playing some of their best tennis of the year in this tournament. Haddad Maia's 6-1 in her last seven U.S. Open matches, as the No. 18 seed thrives on the energy from her numerous Brazilian supporters in the crowd and reached the quarterfinals here last year. Sakkari has slipped to 64th in the rankings, and she's just 6-11 in her last 17 Grand Slam matches, even with her wins in the first two rounds here against a pair of unseeded opponents. The 30-year-old from Greece made two Grand Slam semifinals in 2021, but she hasn't been close to the same player in recent years.

Honorable Mention

Kamil Majchrzak (-165) vs. Leandro Riedi
