Wyndham Championship

Greensboro, North Carolina
Sedgefield Country Club - Par 70 - 7,131 yards
Field - 156 entrants
Purse - $6.4M

The Preview

Playoff hopefuls gather in a hot and muggy Greensboro, North Carolina this week for the 2020-21 regular season finale, where the struggle for last-minute FedExCup points can provide just as much drama as a battle for the podium Sunday afternoon. This is especially true with names such as Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood currently on the outside looking in when it comes to a Northern Trust invitation.

Sedgefield Country Club, which has hosted the Wyndham Championship since 2008, often lends some of the highest GIR rates on Tour, though its sloped bermuda putting surfaces provide a challenge for those who might struggle with the flat stick. The par-70 layout features only two par-5s, but both are capable of being eagled as each of the past five champions have reached at least 21-under-par, showcasing the importance of proximity and birdie or better opportunities here.

Cream of the Crop

Louis Oosthuizen - $44

Oosthuizen has withdrawn from this week's event.

At his current standing of eighth in FedExCup points, Oosthuizen is on track to enter the playoffs as the highest-ranked player without a win, but he'll have one last chance to change that in his Sedgefield Country Club debut. The South African owns three finishes of T3 or better in four of seven international starts dating to the PGA Championship, and he paces the entire PGA Tour in SG: Putting this season. In addition to a trusty flat stick, he's third in Prox: 175-200 yards and fifth in SG: Approach over his last 12 rounds.

Hideki Matsuyama - $42

Matsuyama has gained an average of 8.65 strokes from tee to green per tournament throughout his past four measured starts, which doesn't include a T4 performance back home in Japan at the Olympic Games. The 2021 Masters champion is coming off a playoff loss in Memphis where he gained nearly nine strokes on the field with his irons, and he's third in SG: Approach over his last 12 rounds. Expanding the sample size to 24 rounds, Matsuyama is No. 1 in eagles and No. 2 in Opportunities Gained. He's also tallied a trio of top-15 results in Greensboro since 2013.

Glue Guys

Russell Henley - $35

Henley's iron/full-wedge play is the main attraction here, as he ranks top-3 among the field in SG: Approach, Prox: 125-150 and Prox: 150-175 yards across his last 12 rounds. He tied for ninth at Sedgefield CC in 2020, when he hit 61 of 72 greens in regulation and played his final 36 holes in 12-under-par. Henley is coming off a missed cut overseas at the Open Championship, but he previously recorded three straight top-20s from the U.S. Open through the John Deere Classic.

Talor Gooch - $33

Gooch has managed to string together seven consecutive finishes of T44 or better despite underachieving off the tee, which is an issue that can be masked on a layout like Sedgefield's. He's seventh in SG: Approach over his last 12 rounds and he posted a top-25 at the Wyndham last year, tying for the 36-hole lead after opening with back-to-back 65s.

Zach Johnson - $31

The 45-year-old tied for seventh at the 2020 Wyndham Championship thanks to a third-round 61, but he also notched a top-5 here back in 2013. Over his last 24 rounds, Johnson ranks second in SG: Putting on bermuda greens and he's third from the 5-10 ft. range during this span as well. Additionally, Johnson is No. 2 in Prox: 125-150 across his past 12 rounds.

Bargain Bin

Chez Reavie - $26

Reavie registered back-to-back top-10s in his first two career showings at Sedgefield CC, but he's failed to record anything better than a T37 in seven appearances since 2012. Nonetheless, his current form is quite solid for a mid-$20s valuation as he ranks second in driving accuracy, third in three-putt avoidance on bermuda, eighth in P4: 400-450 efficiency and 10th in Opportunities Gained over his last 24 rounds. Reavie is also second in Prox: 150-175 yards and 15th in SG: APP throughout his past 12.

Ryan Armour - $24

It was quite a shock to see Armour perched atop my custom model this week, but he recently went T5-T6 at the Barbasol Championship and 3M Open while ranking top-5 in P4: 400-450 scoring, FIR percentage and three-putt avoidance on bermuda over his last 24 measured rounds. He's also a collective 56-under-par throughout his past four trips to Sedgefield en route to a quartet of top-25s. Although he's accrued four top-10s this season, Armour is right near the FedExCup Playoffs bubble at 122nd in the standings.

Brian Stuard - $22

Prior to a missed cut at the Barracuda Championship, Stuard went T8-T15-T6 from the John Deere Classic through the 3M Open to launch himself inside the top-100 of the FedExCup standings, so the weight's been lifted off his shoulders ahead of the Wyndham. He's gained no less than 2.5 strokes putting in five consecutive measured starts, but he's also second in Prox: 175-200 yards and ninth in SG: Approach over his last 12 rounds. Throughout his past 24 rounds, Stuard is fourth in driving accuracy and ninth in P4: 400-450 efficiency.
