Fight Stat Wrap: UFC Calgary Recap

This article is part of our Fight Stat Wrap series.

The UFC returned to Calgary for the first time since 2012. In the main event of UFC on FOX 30, Dustin Poirier picked up a definitive victory over Eddie Alvarez that was not without controversy. Also on the main card, former featherweight champion Jose Aldo got back on track and put up the highest DraftKings score of the night. The following is a by-the-numbers recap that highlights the stats and milestones that stood out on the main card, with stats courtesy of FightMetric.com.

Dustin Poirier finishes Eddie Alvarez following a restart

The first round of this fight was rather even. Poirier finished with a slight edge in terms of significant strikes 20 to 18. In the second round, Alvarez took the top position and was controlling the fight via position. The referee restarted the fight on the feet due to an illegal 12-6 elbow. Alvarez had only landed four significant ground strikes at that point, but he appeared to be on the way winning the round. Once the fight returned to the feet, Poirier scored a knockdown and finished the fight. In the decisive second round, Poirier outlanded Alvarez 28-4 at distance. For the fight overall, Poirier finished with a 54 to 26 significant strike advantage.

Poirier finished with 107 DraftKings points, which was the third-highest score of the night. It was the only second-round finish of the evening. Poirier was one of six fighters to score over 100 points at the event.

Jose Aldo goes to the body to stop Jeremy Stephens

Aldo picked up his first stoppage victory in almost five years and only his second victory since 2014. He ate some shots early from Stephens, but he turned the tide with a body-shot knockdown late in the first round. He followed up with 12 significant strikes on the floor to finish the bout. For the fight, Aldo landed 29 significant strikes at 46 percent. The victory puts him into an interesting position in the division. He has a pair of losses against the current champion, but he also owns multiple wins over other contenders Frankie Edgar and Chad Mendes.

Aldo put up the highest DraftKings score of the night with 117.5 points. There were five first-round finishes on the card but by accumulating 29 significant strikes and a knockdown, Aldo to top the rankings on the night.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk avoids losing streak with decision over Tecia Torres

After back-to-back losses, Jedrzejczyk finally got back on track in her first 15-minute fight since 2014. While Torres was able to neutralize the former champion's striking advantage at time, she failed on all eleven of her takedown attempts and landed only four significant strikes in the clinch. At distance, this fight belonged to Jedrzejczyk. She outlanded Torres 40 to 29 in the position.

While Jedrzejczyk was able to dominate this fight with her striking, Torres' gameplan did prevent her from putting up a high score. She clearly won all three rounds, but she finished with only 61 DraftKings points. Jedrzejczyk was a reliable point scorer while she was champion due to her striking volume. However, it looks like players might not want to count on her in three-round fights.

Alexander Hernandez beat Olivier Aubin-Mercier at his own game

Aubin-Mercier is at his best when he is able to get takedowns and control from the top position. That was not an option in this fight. While he did land a pair of takedowns, Hernandez proved to be the better grappler. He landed four takedowns, a pair of passes and a reversal. Hernandez also did a much better job of mixing in his striking with his grappling. On the ground, he outlanded Aubin-Mercier on significant strikes 12 to one. He also had that advantage in the clinch, where he outlanded his opponent 17 to nine.

Thanks to his grappling stats, Hernandez was able to finish with a respectable DraftKings score despite the decision. He finished with 80.5 points, which was the eighth highest score of the night.
