Max medical suspension despite win
May 14, 2020
Simon was suspended 180 days by the Florida Boxing Commission on Thursday pending a physician's clearance, Nolan King of MMAJunkie.com reports.
Simon came through with one of the biggest wins of his career Wednesday, beating the wrestler at his own game en route to a decision win. He didn't emerge completely unscathed, however, as he'll now have to sit a full six months unless cleared earlier by a medical professional. The state of Florida does not disclose the specifics of these injuries,.
Rebounds with win over Ray Borg
May 13, 2020
Simon defeated Ray Borg via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Wednesday in Jacksonville.
Simon fought better than the "split decision" label would lead you to believe. Yes, Borg was the more effective fighter on the feet, but Simon landed his fair share of shots. As far as grappling goes, it was no contest. Simon blew through Borg to the tune of seven successful takedowns on 11 attempts. He may have dropped Round 3, but he clearly won Rounds 1 and 2. This is probably the biggest win of Simon's career. He entered on a two-fight losing streak (Rob Font, Urijah Faber) and clearly needed this one. A product of Dana White's Contender Series, Simon is now 4-2 with the UFC.
In line to fight May 13
April 29, 2020
Simon will take on Ray Borg in a bantamweight matchup at UFC Jacksonville on May 13, Borg disclosed Wednesday via his personal Twitter account.
Simon didn't previously have a fight lined up following his December loss to Rob Font, but he'll get a chance to bounce back from a two-fight losing streak on just a few weeks' notice. He'll enter this matchup against Borg with a two-inch height and six-inch reach advantage, though both fighters have typically leaned on grappling during their respective UFC runs, so the disparity may not be as much of an advantage as one would think. Simon averages two more takedowns than Borg (per 15 minutes of fight time), and his takedown defense is 21 percent better.
Losing streak hits two
December 7, 2019
Simon lost to Rob Font via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Washington D.C.
While it certainly wasn't the result Simon was looking for, it was certainly an improvement from his 46-second knockout loss at the hands of Urijah Faber in July. Simon started quickly on Saturday but couldn't maintain the momentum. He did land six successful takedown attempts, but those six scores came on a whopping 16 tries and Simon did little with his positional advantage. When it was all said and done, however, the pair of combatants will each walk away $50,000 richer after receiving Fight of the Night honors. Simon is in a difficult position moving forward. He's too young (27) to be considered a legitimate prospect, but he's clearly better than fringe fighters at 135 pounds. A loser of two fights in a row, Simon is probably going to have to go on another little run in order to get another bout against a quality opponent.
Will fight at UFC Washington DC
October 29, 2019
Simon will face Rob Font in a bantamweight bout at UFC Washington DC on Dec. 7, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
Simon is coming off a loss to Urijah Faber via KO (punches) at UFC Sacramento that snapped an eight-fight win streak, but the 27-year-old still carries a 15-2 record over his professional career. Font last fought in December 2018, defeating Sergio Pettis via unanimous decision and bringing his record as a professional fighter to 16-4. Font carries slight advantages over Simon in height and reach.
